The Rover” or “The Banish’d Cavaliers,” first appeared on stage in 1677. The author, Aphra Behn, was a spy for Charles II against the Dutch. However, Charles was slow to pay her for her services, if he ever paid her at all. Behn sought to make money first with her poetry, and then with plays and novels. This restoration comedy features multiple plots, dealing with the amorous adventures of a group of Englishmen in Naples at Carnival time. Learn about French culture and language Children in grades five through seven are invited to discover the French language and culture with Amanda Acquaire, an experienced traveler and student of the French culture and language. This program will be offered at the Franklin Lakes Public Library on July 22 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Participants will venture to Paris, Bordeaux, and the French countryside without leaving the neighborhood. Children will learn basic French introductions and sayings, play games to practice basic skills, discover a variety of French-speaking countries, and experience foods, sports, and entertainment of the French culture. All are welcome, novice or native, but registration is required for this program. Graduates earn honor Franklin Lakes Middle School announced 38 graduates received the 2010 Stephen M. Opremcak Jr. Award for Out- standing Academic Achievement. Stephen Opremcak was a former member of the Franklin Lakes Board of Education. To qualify for the award, students must consecutively earn an A or A- on all final grades during their seventh and eighth grade years. Heavenly Treasures Sale set The Presbyterian Church at Franklin Lakes will be holding its 22nd Heavenly Treasures Sale through July 24. This gigantic sale will offer thousands of bargains. Beginners and accomplished readers who will be entering grades one through six can make friends with well-behaved certified therapy dogs while polishing their reading and public speaking skills. Children are invited to read to one of the dogs for 10minute periods on July 26 and Aug. 2 and 16 from 4 to 5 p.m. Registration is required. Beading and jewelry workshop set The Franklin Lakes Public Library will hold a beading and jewelry workshop for children in grades three through six. Girl Scouts hold membership drive The Franklin Lakes Girl Scouts are now accepting registrations for 2010-11. Girls are invited to sign up as members of a Girl Scout troop, or as individual Girl Scouts. Along with troop activities, Girl Scouts of Northern New Jersey offers many programs for girls of all ages. From visiting a local business to international travel, Girls Scouts has something to offer every girl. Financial assistance is available. Membership is open to all girls ages five through 17.
