Page 10 THE VILLADOM TIMES I • July 21, 2010 Midland Park Council resolution marks Boy Scouts’ centennial The Midland Park Mayor and Council adopted a resolution last month congratulating Boy Scout Troop and Pack 157 on the 100th anniversary of the Boy Scout of America. Lorraine DeLuca, the Boy Scouts’ assistant district commissioner, thanked the governing body for their efforts, singling out Councilman Bud O’Hagan for initiating the acknowledgement and Borough Clerk Addie Hanna for her behind-the-scenes assistance. “The mission of the Boy Scouts of America is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law,” DeLuca told the gathering. “The vision is to offer young people responsible fun and adventure; to train young people in citizenship, service, and leadership and to serve America’s communities and families by being prepared to do their best. Today, in our centennial year, we are Celebrating the Adventure and Continuing the Journey,” she said. Lyme disease (continued from page 7) significant among animals. A recent study by a northern New Jersey lab confirms the growing number of Lyme cases in the United States. Even though Lyme positive animals have been found throughout the U.S., Bergen County is one of the many areas in East with the highest confirmed cases. Lyme disease can present with different symptoms or none at all in animals. Common signs are limping, swollen lymph nodes, fever, painful joints, lethargy, and loss of appetite. Many area veterinarians include Lyme testing as part of a standard wellness checkup. At times, positive cases are seen without symptoms. Risk factors include time spent in grassy or wooded areas, particularly during spring and fall, peak tick seasons. All ticks must be considered hazardous to humans and animals, and proper prevention and removal must be conducted. Animal owners should provide their pets with flea and tick treatments, vaccination, and routine tick checks.
