Borough’s Lions Club donates $23K Challenge (continud from page 6) “This represents a gross extension of constitutional law into an area never intended by the United States Supreme Court or the New Jersey Supreme Court.” Superintendent Lauren Schoen emphasized that Judge McGill’s recommendation was not the result of the extracurricular policy being implemented but because a student’s parents filed a suit challenging the policy because it might have applied to their child, not because of any incident involving their child. “The policy itself was developed to address concerns about activities in our communities that had the potential to impact the safe environment we strive to provide for all of our students within our two high schools,” Schoen said. “The board believes that Judge McGill’s recommendation fails to recognize that participation in extracurricular activities is a privilege, not a right. We believe the policy is consistent with all applicable laws, regulations, and statutes. As the administrative law judge only issues a recommendation, the extracurricular policy will remain in force until an actual ruling is made.” Theresa Meese reacted to the board’s filing of the exception to Judge McGill’s recommendation saying, “It saddens me that this board is going to continue to waste taxpayer dollars by prolonging the inevitable. We are prepared to aggressively defend the judge’s decision in this matter through the appeals process if necessary.” Dave Kampschmidt of the Franklin Lakes Ambulance Corps accepting a check from Lions Club President Alex Arns and Ernst Ruppert.
