Kuder named interim superintendent of schools
by John Koster Richard Kuder, principal of the Eisenhower Middle School and former acting superintendent, is now officially the interim superintendent of schools in Wyckoff’s K8 district. He is also a candidate for the superintendent’s job along with a number of other educators who submitted resumes late in June. Popular with students at Eisenhower, Kuder stepped in when Janet Razze stepped down, reportedly for health reasons, some months ago, but the board did not declare him to be official interim superintendent until late June. Razze had received a vote of “no confidence” from the Wyckoff Education Association at a public meeting some months ago as six individual or team spokespersons criticized her for alleged failures to communicate effectively with the teachers. Board members overwhelming defended her. Some observes said that the issue appeared to be that Razze’s cost-cutting measures had offended the WEA, particularly when the school custodians were privatized against the requests of most teachers and many parents. Administration sources declined to comment on the initial stall on naming Kuder as interim superintendent. Jerry Goetting, a resident who sometimes speaks at Wyckoff Township Committee meetings, criticized the committee at the July 6 public meeting for not imposing tough cuts on the defeated school budget. The committee trimmed $478,000 from the school budget, which was narrowly defeated at the polls, but Goetting suggested they should have cut a million and a half, and to have reduced the municipal budget tax increase to zero instead of $84 for the average township house. Township Committeeman Christopher DePhillips and Mayor Rudy Boonstra parried his criticism about not cutting teachers’ salaries by pointing out that they had urged both teachers and administrators to accept a smaller salary increase this year and that neither group had been agreeable to the committee’s proposal. Most of the cuts came from funds to hire substitutes so teachers could take training courses, and from the transportation and building mainte-
nance expenditures. The municipal increase, they said, was caused by state mandates and not local spending.
