January 27, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES I • Page 5 Franklin Lakes Mayor Maura DeNicola to seek freeholder seat by Frank J. McMahon Franklin Lakes Mayor Maura DeNicola has filed a letter of intent with the Bergen County Republican Organization stating her plans to seek election to one of the three available seats on the Bergen County Board of Freeholders that will be up for election this year. All three of those seats are currently occupied by Democrats. Robert Yudin, the chairman of the Bergen County Republican Organization, confirmed the receipt of her letter on Jan. 20. He reported that, if she is nominated as one of the Republican candidates for the board at his organization’s convention in early March, she would not seek reelection to the position of mayor of Franklin Lakes. DeNicola confirmed Yudin’s statement. Under the law, if DeNicola were elected to the board of freeholders, she could not simultaneously hold the office of mayor. If she does not receive the nomination, she said she would probably seek reelection as mayor. In her letter to Yudin, DeNicola pointed out that she has been a public servant for 11 years, having served as a member of the board of education, a councilwoman, and currently as mayor. “During my tenure as mayor I have worked diligently on financial and organizational issues with a focus on efficiencies, accountability, opportunities for shared services and the elimination of redundancies while maintaining a level of services expected by taxpayers,” she stated. “I hope to be able to use this experience in Hackensack.” DeNicola also pointed out that, along with her fellow mayors in Oakland and Wyckoff, a localized shared services group was created that successfully achieved significant savings through cooperative purchasing and joint bid proposals. “By more efficiently using technology in routine borough operations, Franklin Lakes has reduced costs, decreased time on tasks, and increased communication,” she stated. The enormous challenge of addressing the costly complexity of government continues. I believe my knowledge and experience and, most of all, my determination to keep taxpayer value central to all decision-making will serve county residents well in the position of freeholder.” In a statement issued to the press, DeNicola explained, “This is a natural extension of my life-long commitment to public service and my dedication to the town of Franklin Lakes which it is my privilege to serve.” Local officials declined to comment on DeNicola’s decision to seek the Republican nomination for freeholder, but Councilwoman Paulette Ramsey expressed surprise that DeNicola did not announce her intention at last week’s meeting of the Franklin Lakes Republican Club. “I was surprised that we did not learn of this last week at the first meeting for 2010 of the Franklin Lakes Republicans,” Ramsey said. “Mayor DeNicola and council members were present along with club members and interested residents.” FACT: 50-55% OF ALL WOMEN SUFFER FROM VARICOSE VEINS.
