Bergen County Youth Police Academy applicants sought
The County of Bergen, Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, Bergen County Sheriff’s Office, and the Bergen County Police Department announce that applications are now being accepted for the Bergen County Youth Police Academy: Class #6. The academy is a two-week “day camp” (Monday through Friday) that is offered free of charge to qualified Bergen County students who are in grades eight through 11. The camp is funded through the use of moneys forfeited from criminal enterprises. This year’s academy will run from June 28 through July 9. The motto of the Bergen County Youth Police Academy is “Honor – Respect – Commitment.” The objective is to educate the cadets about public service, including county government, the judiciary, emergency services, and law enforcement. “Strong emphasis is placed on self respect, respect of others, teamwork, and commitment to one’s goals,” stated Prosecutor John L. Molinelli. “With structured events that are informative, interactive, educational, and hands-on, the format is similar to what actual police academy cadets experience.” The curriculum will consist of educational activities and physical training. Daily programs include presentations from educators, interaction with county agencies, and field trips. The cadets will be given exposure to available state and county resources. This year’s academy will be held at the Bergen County Law and Public Safety Institute in Mahwah. Application forms are available at local high schools, police departments, and online at BCPO.net and must be submitted by Friday, May 7, 2010. Space is limited. For additional information, contact the Community Outreach Division at (201) 336-3540, or Eileen Hughes at ehughes@bcpo.net.
Club sets Annual Spring House Tour
The Junior Woman’s Club of Ridgewood will hold its Thirteenth Annual Spring House Tour on Thursday, May 13 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The tour, which is a charity event, will feature five unique homes located in Ridgewood. Interior decor styles range from eclectic to traditional. All homes feature design elements that are visually spectacular, making this year’s event one not to be missed. “The Junior Woman’s Club of Ridgewood is excited to present the 2010 House Tour,” said JWC President Bernadette Walsh. “This is always a very rewarding day for the members of our club. The homes this year are brilliant, each one unique in architecture and décor -- everyone will find a home that appeals to (his or her) own taste. I thank the owners for graciously opening their homes for this worthy event, and working with them has been a pleasure. Our House Tour Committee is dedicated to providing our community with a pleasurable day of touring homes while raising funds to support local women’s and children’s charities.” Participants will be able to enjoy lunch in downtown Ridgewood where there are various dining establishments. The annual Spring House Tour is the largest fundraiser hosted by the Junior Woman’s Club of Ridgewood, a non-profit organization dedicated to serving the community. Over the past five years, the Annual House Tour, which typically hosts over 1,000 attendees, raised close to $250,000. Tickets are $40 per person and are tax-deductible.
