Parents invited to workshop Parents of teens are invited to attend a free parenting workshop on Tuesday, Feb. 2 at 7 p.m. at the Franklin Lakes Public Library, 470 DeKorte Drive. “How to Listen So Teens will Talk” will be led by Fern Weis, certified life coach. Weiss specializes in coaching parents of teens and is the facilitator of the “How to Talk” and “The Biggest Job: Parenting from Principles” workshops. All are welcome. Call (201) 891-2224 for further information. ‘Now We Can Sing’ concert set Keith Torgan and flutist Barbara Siesel will present a concert on Sunday, Feb. 7 at 2 p.m. at the Franklin Lakes Public Library. Torgan and Siesel will share songs of Bach, Hindemith, Copland, Gershwin, and others which were banned to Jewish musicians during the 1930s in Europe. All are welcome. Computer classes offered Franklin Lakes Public Library is offering adult computer classes during the month of February, and registration has begun at the adult reference desk. The following classes will be offered: Beginning Microsoft Word on Wednesday, Feb. 10 at 11 a.m.; Blogging Class on Wednesday, Feb. 17 at 11 a.m.; and Google Earth Class on Wednesday, Feb. 24 at 11 a.m. A special two-session database class, “BCCLS and Franklin Lakes Library Databases,” is being offered Feb. 18 and 25 at 11 a.m. All who have a beginning knowledge of the computer and can maneuver easily on the Internet are welcome to sign up for these free classes by calling (201) 891-2224. Spring sports registration to begin In-person registration for spring sports will be held on Feb. 9, 16, and 23 and Feb. 11, 18, and 25 at the recreation department, 1 Vichiconti Way. Online registration will be open beginning Feb. 1 at www.gameplan411.com. Spring sports include baseball and softball for grades one through nine, spring roller hockey for kindergarten and first graders, and a kindergarten clinic for T-ball. Registrations received after Feb. 28 will incur a late fee. Teen Book Club to meet Readers in grades seven through nine are invited to join the Franklin Lakes Library Book Club for Teens. The group meets at 4:30 p.m. at the library on the last Wednesday of each month. “Graceling” by Kristin Cashore will be discussed on Jan. 27. On Feb. 24, the group will discuss “Chains” by Laurie Halse Anderson. Those who cannot attend the meeting may join in the discussion at http://katethelibrarian. blogspot.com. The library hosts book discussion groups for participants of all ages. Books for each month can be picked up at the front desk at Franklin Lakes Library. Snacks are served. Healthy lifestyle tips offered “Keeping Healthy during the Winter Months Naturally” will be presented on Jan. 26 at 7 p.m. at the Franklin Lakes Public Library. Joshua Goldstein will discuss the six vital steps for increasing the function of the body’s immune system during the winter months and throughout the year. Goldstein, certified in acupuncture and Shiatsu massage, will discuss stages of colds or flu and what supplements or methods can be used to treat the various phases of ill-health. A question and answer session will follow his presentation. The program is open to all who are interested in winning the battle for
good health during this frigid season when immune systems are run down and various illnesses are spread. Speaker to discuss benefit options Steven Lizak of AFLAC will address the Franklin Lakes Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday, Jan. 27 at 8 a.m. in borough hall. Organ donor sought Franklin Lakes resident Alan Segal is in urgent need of a kidney transplant and is waiting for a donor. The donor must be in general health and have blood type O positive, with no history of diabetes. Foundation sets fundraiser date The Franklin Lakes Education Foundation will host its annual fundraiser and auction on Friday, March 12 at 7 p.m. at Seasons in Washington Township. This
year’s event will focus on old school nostalgia with a rock and roll twist, featuring live music by The Nerds, America’s favorite cover band. Teen poets, lyricists wanted The Teen Poetry Contest sponsored by the Franklin Lakes Library will be held as part of National Library Week 2010. Teens in grades seven through 12 who live in the Franklin Lakes area or attend school there, are invited to submit a contest entry form along with an original poems or song lyrics. Entries should be no more than 250 words. Entries must be submitted to Franklin Lakes Library or directly to kate_thelibrarian.yahoo.com. Information from the contest entry form must be included with submission. No entries will be accepted after Monday, April 5. Contest winners will be announced during National Library Week (April 11-17). First prize is a $50 American Express gift card; second and third prizes are $25 Barnes and Noble gift cards. The Voice of Democracy is an annual contest designed to foster patriotism by giving high school students in grades nine through 12 the opportunity to voice their opinions about their personal obligations as Americans and their responsibilities to the country. Created in 1947, the program provides more than $3 million a year in scholarships. The first-place winner, who competes with all the first-place VFW Department winners, receives a $30,000 scholarship that is paid directly to the recipient’s American university, college or vocational/technical school. Besides competing for the top scholarship prize, and other national scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $16,000, each department’s first-place winner receives an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C. Natale Szabo, a senior at Medical Lake High School in Airway Heights, Washington, is the first place winner in the 2009 National Voice of Democracy Program and was the recipient of the VFW $30,000 Scholarship Award.
