Cell companies to join applications for one pole
Two telecommunications companies trying to locate antennas in Midland Park will be joining forces with a combined application for a use variance in front of the board of adjustment. The borough’s planner will recommend which company’s location is best suited for the monopole. T-Mobile Northeast LLC had an application in front of the board to locate a 90 ft. flagpole antenna on the parking lot of the medical building at 44 Godwin Avenue, while Verizon Wireless had a similar application for the Sears shopping center at 80 Godwin Avenue. When their attorneys found out about each other’s application just prior to last week’s board meeting, they decided to combine their requests and attempt to co-locate on the same flagpole. Board Attorney Doug Doyle suggested that the cell companies get together with the borough’s planner “to get guidance as to which application is potentially better.” He made it clear that the board was not committing itself to the application whatsoever. He also stressed that regardless of the planner’s recommendation, either cell company could disagree and proceed with its own application. Board Chairman Linda Helihy said that a noise engineer should be involved early on in determining the desirability of the site. T-Mobile attorney Greg Meese said that whichever application moved forward would have to be amended to provide for a 110-foot pole with two locators, and it would have to show where the equipment for both would go on the site. He said his company would have no problem with either location. Meese said that the owners of the King’s and A&P shopping centers and Kuiken Lumber had all declined to allow the monopoles on their properties. He said he was not aware of any municipally-owned sites in close proximity, but asked the board to let him know if any property was available and the company “would be willing to look and see if it works.” The applicant needs a use variance because telecommunications antennas are only a permitted uses on municipallyowned property. Borough officials said no inquiries had been made about town property. The application is now scheduled for the board’s Feb. 10 meeting. The board is also considering an application from Omnipoint Communications, LLC to site nine whip antennas atop the water tank on Glen Avenue. That application is awaiting testimony from radio frequency and acoustics experts to determine the impact the proposal, which has equipment very close to the property line, will have on the neighbors.
