‘Housewives’ will return to cable TV
by Frank J. McMahon Bravo, a program service of NBC Universal Cable Entertainment, has confirmed that that there will be a second season of “The Real Housewives of New Jersey.” The new episodes, which are currently being filmed in the Borough of Franklin Lakes, are scheduled to premiere in 2010. Bravo Press Manager Kristen Anderson recently confirmed the announcement, saying, “The Real Housewives of New Jersey’s freshman season was the highest rated ‘real housewives’ series ever in all demographics, averaging 2.55 million total viewers and 1.91 million adults between the ages of 18 and 49. “The series first season reunion of the Housewives of New Jersey was Bravo’s most watched ‘Housewives’ reunion special ever presented on TV.” “The Real Housewives of New Jersey” is produced by Sirens Media LLC for Bravo. A permit to film in the borough was obtained last August, and crews have been filming since October. The permit indicates that the filming will last for about 40 days in the borough, and that will provide $60,000 in revenue for the borough at the $1,500 per day fee required by borough ordinance. The ordinance requires the payment of certain fees for commercial filming conducted within Franklin Lakes. It covers the taking of still or motion pictures, either on film or videotape or similar recording medium, for commercial or educational purposes, intended for viewing on television, in theaters or for institutional uses. It does not include the filming of news stories within the borough. The ordinance sets the fees for permits for different kinds of filming and the cost of a permit for a major motion picture of a television series is $1,500 a day. Last year, the TV reality television show resulted in $30,000 in revenue for the borough for the 20 days the show was filmed in town. Filmed in the borough and other parts of New Jersey in the spring and summer of 2008, the show featured two sisters who are married to two brothers, and one sister-in-law who live in the borough plus two other women who live in Wayne and Montville. The show involved a familial drama, along with the women’s shopping, decorating, dating, and fighting. The women were chosen for the series on the basis of their affluence and the fact that they run households, have businesses, and have an interesting story to tell, according to Andersen. She said after one of the women was located she opened up her circle of friends and family to the project. A total of six episodes were filmed and aired on Bravo along with a follow-up reunion episode. The series was aired on Tuesday nights beginning in May 2009.
