Ramapo Indian Hills trustees up for election
by Frank J. McMahon Two Wyckoff trustees’ positions and one Franklin Lakes trustee’s position on the Ramapo Indian Hills Regional Board of Education will be up for election in the April 20 school board election. The terms of Wyckoff trustees James Hogan and Lynn L. Budd and Franklin Lakes trustee Wayne Peterson are expiring this year, and Budd and Peterson have indicated their intention to seek reelection to the board. They are in the process of gathering signatures on nominating petitions which are currently available at the administrative offices of the school board, which is located at the Indian Hills High School on Yawpo Avenue, Oakland. Hogan has indicated that he is still undecided as to whether he will seek another term on the board. Nominating petitions may be picked up between 8 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. each weekday. Anyone interested in seeking election to a seat on the board must complete and file the nominating petition with the school board secretary no later than 4 p.m. on Monday, March 1. Peterson is currently the president of the school board, having been unanimously selected by his peers last year. Budd was appointed to the board last year to fill the unexpired term of Wyckoff trustee Kathy Scarpelli and will be seeking her first elected term on the board. Hogan was elected to the school board in 2007. Peterson has been a resident of Franklin Lakes for over 21 years. He is married and the father of three children, all of whom graduated from the schools in the regional high school district. He holds a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and economics from Cornell University and a bachelor’s degree in finance and statistics from the University of Chicago. He completed a 20-year career at Morgan Stanley in 2003 as president of Morgan Stanley Commodities Management Inc., and he has subsequently served as a consultant to Morgan Stanley, training employees with a 30-hour course on commodities. Peterson was selected to serve on school board’s Community Issues Committee in 2004 and was elected to the school board in 2007. He has since served on the Policy, Finance and Personnel/Goals/Evaluation committees and as the board’s liaison to the Borough of Franklin Lakes. “As a board of education member, I have worked tirelessly to improve our district’s focus on student achievement, seeking to make sure we deliver a high-quality education to our students at a cost that is affordable to our taxpayers,” Peterson said, adding that he is seeking another term because he feels the district has hired a highly-qualified superintendent to serve as the district’s next educational leader and he confident that she has a focus that is aligned with the board of education on the important task of significantly improving student achievement. Budd’s professional experience in education is primarily on the college level. She has served as assistant dean of students at Fordham University, where she taught undergraduate English courses in Fordham College and in the School of General Studies. She was also an adjunct at the College of New Rochelle. She completed her master’s and Ph.D. degrees in English and comparative Renaissance literature at Fordham, and was director of the campus center and foreign student advisor. Subsequent to moving to Wyckoff, she worked for IBM, primarily in human resources, executive development, strategic planning, and compensation. In addition, she founded a joint program with Syracuse University to enable IBM executives to complete college degrees in shortened, intense residential programs tailored to their specific needs. She is currently a partner in a family-owned software/middleware development company. Her two children graduated from the Sicomac and Eisenhower schools in Wyckoff and her son went on to the Dwight Englewood High School, while her daughter attended and graduated from Ramapo High School. Emphasizing her experience and the results she has achieved with district schools and the respect and affection she has for the community, she said, “I would like to continue to work to improve and enhance this tradition of excellence in our schools while emphasizing fiscal responsibility and controlling costs.” Hogan has three children and has lived in Wyckoff for 16 years. His children have attended Eisenhower Middle School in Wyckoff and Ramapo High School, where his daughter is currently a senior. He has been involved in both the recreation and traveling baseball, softball, soccer, and lacrosse programs in Wyckoff as a head coach. He was also a member of the Wyckoff Traveling Booster Organization. In addition, he is a past president of the Ramapo Athletic Boosters Association. At the April 20 school board election, voters in the regional school district will also have the opportunity to vote on the district’s budget for the 2010-11 school year. A public hearing on that budget is scheduled for March 29 at 8 p.m. at Ramapo High School in Franklin Lakes.
