Borough’s Republican Forum decides to disband
by Frank J. McMahon The members of the Franklin Lakes Republican Forum, a political organization that was formed in 2007, have decided to disband the group and to join with the borough’s Republican Club in moving the party forward in the borough, county, and state. Harvey Clarke, the president of the Republican Forum said he and Mayor Maura DeNicola met last month with then-Republican Club President Lisa Costello and reached an agreement to have the members of the Republican Forum become members of the Republican Club and to turn over the balance of the Republican Forum’s treasury to the Republican Club. “We met and we talked and agreed that, given the momentum that was created in the recent gubernatorial election and the (Bergen County) Freeholder election, the best way to build on that momentum and keep moving forward, and move the Republican Party forward in the county, state, and locally in the best and most efficient way, was to have one club instead of two,” Clarke said. “We thought the best thing to do, since the other club was the older club, was to get together with them.” Clarke added that he believed the move will be good for the town and he advised that Republican County Chairman Robert Yudin was very helpful and encouraging about the decision of the Republican Forum to disband, and agreed that it was a good idea. Clarke explained there will be no formal action taken to effect the change, but the Republican Forum’s members will just join the Republican Club at a future meeting of that organization, and the forum’s website will be shut down. Peter Swist, the recently-elected president of the Franklin Lakes Republican Club, confirmed that his organization has been informed that the Republican Forum is being dissolved and that a check for $1,400 has been received by his club. He advised, however, that the check has been returned, because it would be more appropriate for the Republican Forum to donate it either to the Bergen County Republican Organization or to a charity. He emphasized, however, that all the members of the Republican Forum are welcome to submit applications to join the borough’s Republican Club when the club next meets on Jan. 18. “We are looking forward to having a unified Republican voice in the borough,” Swist said. “That works for the town and all of the residents with a balance of opinions and discussion.” DeNicola also confirmed that the Republican Forum is disbanding and that she will be rejoining the Republican Club. She explained that she and Clarke and a number of Republican Forum members attempted to attend the November and December meetings of the Republican Club, but were told those meetings had been cancelled. She said a meeting with Costello about moving forward together was subsequently arranged, and the mayor described that session as very amicable. “In light of Chris Christie’s win and the hope he brings for the future of New Jersey, it was decided to dissolve the Republican Forum,” she said. “I look forward to working together in the future and continuing on the path of doing our best for Franklin Lakes’ taxpayers.” DeNicola added that she still feels strongly about the importance of education, discussion, and debate as healthy elements in any organization.
