Program on Mozart masterpieces set Catherine Sprague will offer “Mozart Masterpieces,” a new multi-media program on Mozart on Sunday, Jan. 17 at 2 p.m. at the Franklin Lakes Public Library. Sprague, a Mozart specialist and pianist, brings Mozart’s greatest works to life in a ninety minute slide and video-clip presentation. Former NFL lineman to speak Former NFL lineman Alan Veingrad will address Café Chabad, a social forum for Jewish adults in the Franklin Lakes/Wyckoff area on Saturday, Jan. 23 at 7 p.m. The community is invited to this evening of drinks, hors d’oeuvres, and entertainment. Veingrad spent five years as an offensive lineman with the Green Bay Packers and two years with the Dallas Cowboys alongside Hall of Fame quarterback Troy Aikman and record-breaking running back Emmitt Smith. He will give an account of the intense training, ruthless competitiveness, and performance requirements of professional football life. Perhaps most compelling is his account of finding himself and his religious identity following his NFL career. In this very personal presentation, he shares the steps of his spiritual journey where he has found a deepening sense of contentment and a renewed sense of purpose. Homework assistance available at library Homework Helpers meet with children in kindergarten through grade five each week on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., through Feb. 11, and then from Feb. 22 through April 8. This program pairs high school student volunteers with elementary school students to assist with specific homework assignments. High school students interested in volunteering for this program may call the children’s department. A new program, Study Buddies, offers assistance to students in grade six. Study Buddies provides a space complete with a high school volunteer and computer access for
groups of students to work on assignments. Study Buddies meets on Wednesdays, from 3 to 4 p.m. through Feb. 10, and Feb. 24 through April 7. Kindergarten registration begins Franklin Lakes parents of students who will enter kindergarten in September 2010 may register their children at their school of attendance: High Mountain Road School, 765 High Mountain Road; Woodside Avenue School, 305 Woodside Avenue; or Colonial Road School, 749 Colonial Road, Tuesday through Friday, Jan. 19 through 22 from 9 a.m. to noon and from 1 to 3 p.m. Anyone unsure of which school their child will attend may contact the board of education at (201) 891-1856. Children are eligible for the kindergarten class in September 2010 if they were born before Oct. 1, 2005. Children do not have to be present during registration. An orientation will be held in May, and parents will schedule an appointment for their children to participate in a screening activity to help determine kindergarten readiness. Parents meet to discuss math curriculum The Franklin Lakes school district is in the process of revising the math curriculum for implementation in September 2010. The following meetings have been scheduled to discuss the K-8 revision process with the public: Tuesday, Jan. 12 at 1 p.m. at Franklin Avenue Middle School; Wednesday, Jan. 13 at 10:30 a.m. at Woodside Avenue School; Monday, Feb. 8 at 1 p.m. at Colonial Road School; and Thursday, Feb. 25 at 9:15 a.m. at Franklin Avenue Middle School. Parents and residents are invited to attend any one or all parent math meetings. Revisions for K-8 will be discussed at all the meetings, but the six through eight grade process will be emphasized on Jan. 12 and Feb. 25. Teen Book Club to meet Readers in grades seven through nine are invited to join the Franklin Lakes Library Book Club for Teens. The group meets at 4:30 p.m. at the library on the last Wednesday of each month. “Graceling” by Kristin Cashore will be discussed on Jan. 27. Commission’s report on display The Franklin Lakes Environmental Resource Inventory will be on display for the public in the art gallery of the Franklin Lakes Library, 470 DeKorte Drive, during the month of January. The objective of the report is to record information regarding the present state of the borough’s environmental and cultural resources. This new ERI was adopted by the council and the planning board and will serve as a framework for future planning decisions in order to protect, preserve, and conserve these resources. The study was undertaken with the support of the mayor and council with a grant from the Association of New Jersey Environmental Commissions. The last ERI was completed in 1974.

His new appointment as mayor will put him on the Wyckoff Planning Board. He is one of the owners of Sicomac Dairy. The township committee also welcomed the newly elected members, Christopher De Phillips, and Kevin Rooney. De Phillips is a graduate of Bergen Catholic High School, Georgetown University, and Seton Hall Law School. De Phillips has practiced law for 17 years and is active in the American Bar Association. He and his wife Patti have four children in the local public schools. Rooney is a graduate of Northern Highlands Regional High School and Ramapo College. He has served 10 years on the Wyckoff Board of Adjustment and has been a member of the Wyckoff Shade Tree Commission since 2007. He is a licensed arborist. He and his wife Hayley have four children.
