Modest progress was made with our Chamber of Commerce in 2009 there, but there’s much more to be done as 2009’s increase in tax appeals and delinquencies threatens to upset our stable tax base,” he said. “We need the help of citizens and businesses alike - especially our businesses - and continue to strongly encourage their involvement and input,” he added. The mayor noted that while the governing body had responded to the economic crisis by keeping down expenditures, the savings were obliterated by a dramatic decrease in interest revenue. “By aggressive use of grants, competitive bidding of services- especially banking, expense management and expanded utilization of inter-locals, we believe we have progressed towards heading off some of the pressure in 2010 as the state undoubtedly will struggle to provide any meaningful aid. In addition, we have a healthy balance sheet and surplus from prior years to help minimize the impact of a sluggish economy and a state fiscal condition that’s amongst the worst in the nation,” he said. The mayor appointed the following council liaison committees for 2010. (First name noted is the chairman.) Finance - Councilmen Nick Papapietro and Scott Pruiksma; Public Safety, Police - Councilmen Patrick O’Hagan and Bernard Holst; Public Safety, Fire and Ambulance Councilmen Michael Junta and Papapietro; Public Works - Councilman Holst and Councilwoman Nancy Peet; Personnel – Councilwoman Peet and Councilman O’Hagan; Recreation - Councilmen Pruiksma and Junta; Board of Education Liaison - Councilwoman Peet; Board of Health Liaison – Councilman Junta; Municipal Alliance Liaison - Councilman O’Hagan; and Community Development – Mayor Joseph Monahan and Councilman Pruiksma.
