Board of education to meet The Franklin Lakes Board of Education will meet March 2 at 8 p.m. at Franklin Avenue Middle School on Franklin Avenue. Registration open at preschool First Step Preschool, 454 Pulis Avenue, is accepting registration for 2010-11. Children two-and-a-half to six years of age may attend. Full and half-days are available. Country Western Purim planned Chabad of Franklin Lakes will host a community wide Purim around the World celebration on Sunday, Feb. 28 at 11 a.m. This year’s country western theme will include Billy the Kid’s dream western buffet, a country western DJ with Jewish music, western crafts and masquerade, a multi-media megillah reading and the program highlight, a performance by cowboy roper and rodeo champion, AJ Silver. AJ Silver has been performing in rodeos and on stage for over 20 years. He was recognized by the International Rodeo Association at The Cowboy Hall of Fame in Oklahoma and has performed rodeo and roping shows around the globe. The program will be held at 45 Spruce Street in Oakland and is open to the entire community. The cost is $10 per person or $36 a family. Sponsorships are $180. Also for Purim, a megillah reading will be held on Saturday, Feb. 27 at 7 p.m. at Chabad of Franklin Lakes, 712 Ewing Avenue, followed by refreshments and a masquerade and Purim merrymaking for adults on Sunday at 5 p.m. No reservations are necessary. Humane Society of the U.S. presents ‘Understanding Beavers’ Laura Simon and Skip Hilliker of the Humane Society of the United States will visit Franklin Lakes Borough Hall, 480 DeKorte Drive, on Saturday, March 6 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. to give a presentation on understanding beavers and offer coping techniques. The discussion includes the ecology of beavers and how their unique engineering skills can create conflicts. Simon and Hilliker will discuss the “Beaver Baffler,” a simple device that can be used to stop the flooding caused by beaver dams. The presenters will also show how to properly wrap trees to prevent them from being felled. Youngsters made and sold stamps, wrote letters, encouraged other students to write letters, collected letters in the mailbox they created in the main lobby, and then delivered the letters throughout the school. The Kindergarten Post Office is an example of the many creative and interdisciplinary programs offered as part of the curriculum.

Spring sports registration to begin In-person registration for spring sports will be held on Feb. 25 at the recreation department, 1 Vichiconti Way. Online registration is open at www.gameplan411.com. Spring sports include baseball and softball for grades one through nine, spring roller hockey for kindergarten and first graders, and a kindergarten clinic for T-ball. Registrations received after Feb. 28 will incur a late fee.
