Township considers bipartisan master plan team
by John Koster The Wyckoff Township Committee expects to complete its master plan revisions by May, and could appoint a bipartisan group of informed residents to work on those revisions before bringing in the general public for a critique. Mayor Rudy Boonstra and Township Committeeman Kevin Rooney had originally envisioned a master plan study panel that would include two members each from the township committee, planning board, board of adjustment, library board, architectural review board, and shade tree commission, and one member from the recreation commission. That group would review the current plan and evaluate future needs. The proposed revisions would then be shown to the public at large and more changes might be incorporated before the official master plan was deemed complete. Brian Scanlan, the sole Democrat on the Wyckoff Township Committee, raised an objection to this scenario: Since the board delegates to the master plan study group are all appointed by the Wyckoff Township Committee, the members are all -- or almost all -- Republicans. Scanlan pointed out that Democrats and Independents would not be involved in the early stages of the revision if the study group were appointed as detailed above. “There are some very qualified people who could provide input,” Scanlan told his peers at the work session. “Who in particular did you have in mind?” Rooney asked. Diane Sobin, who had run for Wyckoff Township Committee as both an Independent and a write-in, was one of the halfdozen people in the audience, but did not speak. Mayor Boonstra noted that the proposed committee would already have 13 members and that, as a rule, committees with more than 10 members tended to become unwieldy. Scanlan suggested that some of the other committees or boards might provide a single delegate, rather than two, to accommodate expanded expertise. Sobin, a registered Republican, has publicly objected to the way the board
appointments are handled. She asserts that the current process effectively screens out Democrats, unaffiliated residents, and Republicans who are not approved by mainstream Republicans. Township Committeeman David Connolly said he saw some merit in Scanlan’s proposal, but that it could be discussed in more detail before a decision is made.

The Wyckoff Township Committee reminds residents that property owners are responsible for keeping sidewalks free of snow and ice. Residents are asked to wait at least eight hours after the snow stops falling before shoveling the sidewalks so the snow plows do not throw the snow back onto cleared walks. Snow must be removed from sidewalks within 12 hours of daylight after the end of the storm. Property owners should arrange for

their sidewalks to be shoveled if they plan a trip during the winter. This is necessary for pedestrian safety, and may deter potential burglars if the house looks occupied. According to the Township of Wyckoff’s code, the throwing of snow or ice on the traveled portion of any road after it has been plowed is prohibited. The police department enforces all related ordinances. Residents who do not comply with these regulations may be subject to fines of up to $500. J. KOSTER
