Traveling softball registration open Registration for the Wyckoff Recreation Department’s select traveling softball team will remain open through Feb. 12. Girls ages nine through 17 who wish to try out for the traveling teams must register by this date. Registration is open to Wyckoff residents only. A copy of the registrant’s birth certificate is required at registration. Only those players who register during the above time period will be contacted regarding tryout dates. Children’s book groups offered “Mr. Popper’s Penguins” by Richard Atwater will be discussed at the third grade book group at the Wyckoff Public Library on Wednesday, Feb. 10 at 3:30 p.m. The Great Book Discussion for fourth and fifth graders will take place Thursday, Feb. 11 at 3:30 p.m. The topic will be “No Talking” by Andrew Clements. Holiday schedules for Presidents’ Day Wyckoff residents will have curbside garbage and trash collection on Presidents’ Day, Feb. 15. In addition, recyclables will be collected in Districts 3 and 7. Wyckoff Town Hall and the recycling center will be closed on Feb. 15 and will reopen Feb. 16 at 9 a.m. The Wyckoff Public Library will be open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Presidents’ Day. Kindergarten registration set Kindergarten registration for the Wyckoff Public Schools will be held Tuesday, Feb. 23 for children with last names beginning with A through L, and Wednesday, Feb. 24 for children with last names beginning with M through Z. Registration will take place at the child’s neighborhood school. A child is eligible for kindergarten in September if he or she attains the age of five on or before Oct. 1, 2010. Original birth certificate, four proofs of residency, and immunization data (DPT, polio, varicella, Hepatitis B, and MMR, as documented by a physician) are required. Celebrate Purim at Beth Rishon Temple Beth Rishon in Wyckoff invites the community for a special Purim celebration on Saturday, Feb. 27. The evening will begin with a congregational Pasta Dinner at 5:30 p.m., followed by a family Megillah reading at 6:15 p.m. This will include Purim songs with the youth choirs, a magician, and a costume parade. At 7 p.m. an adults only Megillah reading will be presented by Rabbi Sandy Olshansky, Cantor Ilan Mamber, and the Rishon Bima Players. The family festivities continue at 7:15 p.m. with a live DJ and desserts. Dinner is free for members with reservations. Wildcats plan Beefsteak The Bergen County Wildcats will host a Beefsteak Dinner on Saturday, March 27 at 6 p.m. at the Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, 467 Grandview Avenue, Wyckoff. This fundraiser will include beefsteak, salad, fries, soda, coffee, and dessert. Tickets are $40 for adults; $20 for children under 12. Members of the Bergen County Wildcats are special needs athletes who range in ages from eight to adult. The Wildcats compete in a variety of sports, including volleyball, floor hockey, bowling, basketball, and softball. In addition, team members participate in the Special Olympics New Jersey Fall Festival, and the winter and summer games. The goal of the Wildcats organization is to provide special needs athletes the opportunity to participate, compete, and belong to a team. Participation increases self-esteem and independence, and gives the athletes a true sense of belonging.
