Borough to join solid waste disposal contract
by Frank J. McMahon In 2011, the Borough of Franklin Lakes will join the Township of Wyckoff and the Borough of Oakland in a regional cooperative solid waste disposal contract with Interstate Waste Services of Ramsey in order to share in the favorable pricing Wyckoff recently obtained in a new three-year contract with that firm. Franklin Lakes cannot join the contract until 2011 because the borough is currently under contract for solid waste disposal with Interstate Waste Services of Sloatsburg, New York, which is essentially the same company, through 2010. Oakland is expected to join in the contract in the middle of this year. Franklin Lakes Borough Administrator Gregory Hart advised that the borough will save $3.65 per ton on its current $72 per ton contract, or about $21,900 per year in waste disposal costs under this cooperative agreement. He told the borough council last month that the new contract provides very favorable prices, and he recommended the council pass a resolution agreeing to join Wyckoff in the township’s new three-year contract, even though the borough’s current contract does not expire until the end of this year. Wyckoff expects to save about $100,000 a year with the new contract which was achieved by combining the garbage disposal tonnage of all three municipalities in order to create a larger contract and achieve a cost savings due to the volume. The cooperative bid process was conducted by Wyckoff, which acted as the lead agency for the cooperative purchasing group known as “WOLF Pack.” WOLF is an acronym for Wyckoff, Oakland, and Franklin Lakes.
Route 66 trip to be discussed
Cadillac Club members Sal Santoro of Rockaway and Bob Walton of Wyckoff will present a slide show presentation, “Armchair Trip on Route 66,” on Friday, Feb. 19 at 7:30 p.m. at the Franklin Lakes VFW Hall (corner of Pulis and Franklin avenues). The program will highlight their recent cross country trip in Walton’s 1968 Cadillac De Ville convertible. Their round trip covered 7,292 miles including all 2,448 miles of historic Route 66 from Chicago to Los Angeles. Memorabilia from the trip will be on display. There will be a brief meeting for Cadillac Club members just before the presentation. The public is welcome, and admission is free.
In December of 2007, Franklin Lakes awarded its current garbage disposal contract to Interstate Waste Services for the three-year period of 2008 through 2010. At the time of that award, the borough also awarded a three-year contract for the collection of garbage, collection and disposal of recyclable materials, and collection of leaves to Scuffy Carting, LLC of Passaic, which submitted the lowest aggregate bid for those services. That contract will be re-bid at the end of this year. The current garbage collection contract with Scuffy Carting cost the borough between $481,408 and $485,334 over the three-year term of the contract for a total contract cost of $1,446,879. The garbage disposal contract with Interstate cost the borough between $426,000 and $438,000 over the three-year life of that contract for a total contract cost of $1,296,000. Those contracts, according to Hart, resulted in a total three-year cost savings of $425,000 with no change in service and no additional burden on the borough’s residents because there was no change in garbage, recycling, or leaf collection schedules during the three-year term of the contracts.
