Assemblymen Scott T. Rumana and David C. Russo will be speaking on developments in Trenton since Governor Christie’s election. All are invited to attend. Parks autograph session set Mystery writer Brad Parks will speak at the Franklin Lakes Public Library on Monday, Feb. 8, at 7 p.m. Parks will discuss “Faces of the Gone” and autograph books. Jazz program offered In celebration of Black History Month, Shinole Latimer will return to Franklin Lakes Library on Feb. 10 at 7 p.m. to share the history of jazz from early 1900s to today. The music of Louis Armstrong, Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, and Miles Davis will be performed and discussed in “Our Music, Our Culture.” Learn why jazz has been called America’s classical music. Parents invited to workshop Parents of teens are invited to attend a free parenting workshop on Tuesday, Feb. 2 at 7 p.m. at the Franklin Lakes Public Library, 470 DeKorte Drive. “How to Listen So Teens will Talk” will be led by Fern Weis, certified life coach. Weiss specializes in coaching parents of teens and is the facilitator of the “How to Talk” and “The Biggest Job: Parenting from Principles” workshops. All are welcome. TeenKula to host Open Mic Night TeenKula for Karma will host an Open Mic Night at Starbucks in Midland Park, 85 Godwin Avenue, on Sunday, Feb. 7 from 5 to 8 p.m. This fundraiser will give teens an opportunity to showcase their unique musical talents, create awareness, and raise money for children and teens with cancer, autism, Down syndrome, and youth at-risk. Local businesses will be supporting the event. TeenKula is a branch of the non-profit organization Kula for Karma (kulaforkarma.org), founded by Franklin Lakes resident Geri Topfer, whose mission is to reach out to the community (kula) to help provide selfless service (karma) to those in need. Through the practice of yoga, this organization works towards healing the broken spirits of victims of illness, abuse, neglect, addiction, and other life obstacles. While many of these activities help adults in need, TeenKula focuses specifically on children and teens. With the money raised from “Open Mic Night” and the “Kulathon” event on April 24 in Franklin Lakes, the TeenKula Committee will determine to which youth organizations the money will be allocated. Computer classes offered Franklin Lakes Public Library is offering adult computer classes during the month of February, and registration has begun at the adult reference desk. The following classes will be offered: Beginning Microsoft Word on Wednesday, Feb. 10 at 11 a.m.; Blogging Class on Wednesday, Feb. 17 at 11 a.m.; and Google Earth Class on Wednesday, Feb. 24 at 11 a.m. A special two-session database class, “BCCLS and Franklin Lakes Library Databases,” is being offered Feb. 18 and 25 at 11 a.m. All who have a beginning knowledge of the computer and can maneuver easily on the Internet are welcome to sign up for these free classes by calling (201) 891-2224. ‘Now We Can Sing’ concert set Keith Torgan and flutist Barbara Siesel will present a concert on Sunday, Feb. 7 at 2 p.m. at the Franklin Lakes Public Library. Torgan and Siesel will share songs of Bach, Hindemith, Copland, Gershwin, and others which were banned to Jewish musicians during the 1930s in Europe. All are welcome. Parents meet to discuss math curriculum The Franklin Lakes school district is in the process of revising the math curriculum for implementation in September 2010. The following meetings have been scheduled to discuss the K-8 revision process with the public: Monday, Feb. 8 at 1 p.m. at Colonial Road School; and Thursday, Feb. 25 at 9:15 a.m. at Franklin Avenue Middle School. Parents and residents are invited to attend any one or all parent math meetings. Revisions for K-8 will be discussed at all the meetings, but the six through eight grade process will be emphasized on Feb. 25. Spring sports registration to begin In-person registration for spring sports will be held on Feb. 9, 16, and 23 and Feb. 11, 18, and 25 at the recreation department, 1 Vichiconti Way. Online registration will be open beginning Feb. 1 at www.gameplan411.com. Spring sports include baseball and softball for grades one through nine, spring roller hockey for kindergarten and first graders, and a kindergarten clinic for T-ball. Registrations received after Feb. 28 will incur a late fee. Lindsay Romano of Franklin Lakes was a winner in Tuxedo Park School’s Academic Math Olympiad. Students are encouraged to participate in these events to stimulate their enthusiasm for mathematics. Math champ Organ donor sought Franklin Lakes resident Alan Segal is in urgent need of a kidney transplant and is waiting for a donor. The donor must be in general health and have blood type O positive, with no history of diabetes.
