December 22, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES I • Page 19 Franklin Lakes Scribe Woman’s Club hosts Blood Drive The Woman’s Club of Franklin Lakes, in cooperation with the Bergen Community Blood Center, a non-profit organization, will hold a Blood Drive on Wednesday, Jan. 19 from 3 to 8 p.m. at the Franklin Lakes Ambulance Corps Building on Bender Court. Participants may schedule an appointment in advance through the Community Blood Center (201) 251-3703, or walk in on the day of the drive. Any healthy individual age 17 through 75 and weighing at least 110 pounds can donate blood. Donors should eat a moderate meal before donating and must bring identification showing signature. All donors receive a complimentary cholesterol screening with every blood donation. Children invited to winter program Children in kindergarten through grade two are invited to join the Franklin Lakes Library’s Brrrright and Snowy program on Wednesday, Jan. 19 at 4:15 p.m. Children may listen to cozy stories by the fireplace, work on a winter craft, and snack on a snowman cookie. Registration is required. Franklin Lakes residents may begin to register on Thursday, Jan. 6; non-residents may register on Jan. 17. Register for story times The Franklin Lakes Public Library will offer Tot-Time for children ages 30 months to five years. Each session includes a variety of activities, including stories, songs, finger plays, and a craft. Attendees experience this first introduction to children’s literature in a relaxed but structured atmosphere. Tot-time is being offered on Tuesdays, Jan. 25, and Feb. 1, 8, and 15 from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. or 1:15 to 2:15 p.m.; or on Thursdays, Jan. 27, and Feb. 3, 10, and 17 from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. or 1:15 to 2:15 p.m. Registration is required. Franklin Lakes residents may begin to register Tuesday, Jan. 4. Non-residents may begin to register Friday, Jan. 21. The P.I.N.T Center, for newborns to children 30 month of age, offers a language-enrichment program, where simple stories, songs, rhymes, and finger plays are presented. Each 45-minute session begins with an informal play period, followed by a more formal presentation. P.I.N.T will be held on Mondays, Jan. 24 and 31, and Feb. 7; a second session will be held on Fridays, March 11, 18, and 25. Meeting times for both sessions are 9:30 to10:15 a.m. or 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. Registration is required. Franklin Lakes residents may begin to register Monday, Jan. 10. Adult Writers Group seeks new members The Adult Writers Group of Franklin Lakes Public Library is open to those who wish to share their writing with others who write, and network for publishing ideas and writing methods. Scouts host Christmas Tree Sale Boy Scout Troop 34 of Franklin Lakes will hold a Christmas Tree Sale on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and on Sundays from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Franklin Lakes United Methodist Church at 454 Pulis Avenue. The sale will be held through Dec. 19. The Scouts will be selling nursery-grown Christmas trees, wreaths, and roping for the holiday season, and will be on hand to assist in the selection and loading of trees. Paws for Reading returns The Paws for Reading program will return to the Franklin Lakes Public Library, 470 DeKorte Drive, this winter. Beginning and accomplished readers in grades one through six can make friends with well-behaved certified therapy dogs while polishing their reading and public speaking skills. Children may sign up to read to one of these dogs for a 10-minute period. Paws for Reading will take place on Mondays, Jan. 10 and 24, Feb. 7 and 28, and March 14 and 28. Teen Poetry Contest announced Franklin Lakes Public Library will sponsor a Teen Poetry Contest during National Library Week 2011 and National Poetry Month. All writers in grade six through 12 are invited to create an original poem or song lyrics of 250 words or less. Submissions are due on or before Monday, April 4, 2011. There is a limit of two submissions per person. All students who live in Franklin Lakes, or attend school in Franklin Lakes (including Indian Hills and Ramapo High Schools), are welcome to participate. Entries will be judged on creativity, clarity, polish, and overall impact. Winners will be announced during National Library Week, April 10 through 16. The Grand Prize is a $50 American Express Gift Card. Contest entry forms are available at the library and on the Teen Space on www.franklinlakeslibrary.org. Poems or written song lyrics may be submitted at the library or emailed to kate_thelibrarian@yahoo.com. Entrants should include the information requested on the entry form with each submission. Cartooning workshop offered to children Gina Minichino, an acclaimed painter, illustrator, and caricature artist, will teach the art of cartooning to children in grades four through seven. This session will be held Tuesday, Jan. 18 at 4:15 p.m. at the Franklin Lakes Public Library, 470 DeKorte Drive. Each child will have an opportunity to create a cartoon character.
