Maria Stefania Paradiso, a third-year nursing student studying with the faculty of Medicine and Surgery of the University of Palermo in Italy, chose to do a research study at Christian Health Care Center in Wyckoff. Paradiso focused on how nurses view and experience the safety culture within the facility. The research study was part of her baccalaureate thesis to meet a requirement for her bachelor of science in nursing degree. She chose to do her research at CHCC because her aunt, Francesca Carabillo, is employed in CHCC’s food services department. “We were delighted to have Stefania conduct her research here because promot-

ing a culture of safety is a serious commitment supported by the entire CHCC community,” said Elaine G. Whelan, RNBC, MA, MSN, clinical education director. “I was also pleased that 57 of our nurses participated in this very worthwhile endeavor.” Paradiso recently shared the results of her study with CHCC, which she translated from Italian to English. Data collected indicated that the level of safety climate within CHCC is excellent, and that nurses within the long-term care division rated relationships among nurses, communication with physicians, and opportunities for education highest among the study’s related variables.
The Wyckoff Planning Board has approved plans to renovate Bourbon BBQ on Goffle Road with a single outdoor grill. Michael Feygin said the renovated building would feature attractive landscaping and that it would be upgraded to meet the standards of the Americans with Disabilities Act. The restaurant was closed in February after a fire that started on the kitchen caught onto the roof. The Bergen County Arson Squad confirmed that the fire had been accidental in origin. Feygin said that placing the grill out-

doors would eliminate the danger of any such fires in the future. The Wyckoff Planning Board declined to accept the concept of two outdoor smokers at the Goffle Road restaurant, but last week approved the concept of a single outdoor smoker. The owner told planners that he hoped to start construction in January and open in March, the beginning of the busiest season. Bourbon BBQ replaced Clixies, a hot dog restaurant that had occupied the location for decades. J. KOSTER
Francesca Carabillo, a food services employee at Christian Health Care Center; her niece Maria Stefania Paradiso, a third-year nursing student from Palermo, Italy, who completed a research project at CHCC; and MaryAnn Juergens, CHCC’s clinical education administrative assistant, who accompanied Paradiso for much of the data collection.
One of the conclusions Paradiso reached from the study is that a health system that aims to optimize the quality of care must invest time and money to improve the nursing work environment and establish a good
safety climate within the company. The non-profit CHCC has been serving the community since 1911, providing a broad scope of mental-health and eldercare programs.
The Wyckoff Board of Education has appointed two new education specialists who will serve until June 30, 2011. Olivia Camilleri has been appointed to serve as a school psychologist. Her salary of $57,655 will cover the remainder of the school year. She has a master’s degree

and 30-plus graduate credits beyond her degree. Susan Roukema, a speech and language specialist with a master’s degree, has been appointed at a pro-rated salary of $69,055 (Step 13). J. KOSTER
