The Midland Park Borough Council last week agreed to install elevated bleachers at Johnny Vander Meer Field, and authorized the municipal engineer to work on plans for the bleachers, a related storage unit, and a retaining wall at the little league field. At the request of Councilwoman Nancy Peet, the governing body had reserved its decision on the bleachers with the goal of considering various options for the grant moneys. The council had also weighed the concept of non-elevated bleachers, but eventually concluded that the higher structure would allow spectators a better line of sight. The first row of the lower seating system would have included an obstructed view for those seated in the front row, particularly wheelchair bound spectators. An open space matching grant will be used to replace the existing 1930s structure. Grant funds for the bleacher project became available when the governing body reversed its decision to install a canopy above one of the new outdoor basketball courts adjacent to the DePhillips Center. The council requested and received permission to reallocate the canopy funds to other projects within the Dairy Street recreation complex. Midland Park Borough Engineer Michael DeSena had recommended the permanent structure with a three-foot platform to give those seated in the front row full view of the field. DeSena estimated the cost of this option, which would include 128 seats and four spaces for wheelchairs, at $55,000. The cost of the non-elevated bleachers was estimated at $32,000, and

would have included 132 seats with four wheelchair cutouts. Mayor Joseph Monahan had suggested the lower structure at a lower cost. However, the governing body later concurred that the lower seating system would not provide a clear view of the field. The new bleachers will sit on a slab, which costs an additional $18,000, and will be placed in the footprint of the existing bleachers. Costs associated with the project include $17,000 to clear and grade the site, $55,000 for the elevated bleacher system, $22,500 for the 10 by 20 utility shed, and $2,400 to relocate the irrigation system. The bleachers will be 14 feet high with a railing in the back and the appropriate access ramps. Councilman Scott Pruiksma suggested the borough use a shipping container rather than construct a concrete shed. He said a container could be easily replaced once it deteriorated. Borough Administrator Michelle Dugan responded that the town needs a durable structure that will hold up over time. She said many groups will use the shed, which will be more attractive than a shipping container, and was more likely to be cost effective. At a previous meeting, Councilman Patrick “Bud” O’Hagan suggested looking into erecting a separate concrete pad elsewhere on the grounds so that persons in wheelchairs could enjoy an unobstructed view of the field. He said such an arrangement was used at the Ridgewood Country Club for the golf tournament last summer.
