December 15, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES I • Page 31 Franklin Lakes Scribe Cartooning workshop offered to children Gina Minichino, an acclaimed painter, illustrator, and caricature artist, will teach the art of cartooning to children in grades four through seven. This session will be held Tuesday, Jan. 18 at 4:15 p.m. at the Franklin Lakes Public Library, 470 DeKorte Drive. Each child will have an opportunity to create a cartoon character. Registration for Franklin Lakes residents begins on Tuesday, Jan. 4. Non-residents may register on Thursday, Jan. 13. Registration may be completed by phone at (201) 891-2224 or in person during regular library hours. Teen Poetry Contest announced Franklin Lakes Public Library will sponsor a Teen Poetry Contest during National Library Week 2011 and National Poetry Month. All writers in grade six through 12 are invited to create an original poem or song lyrics of 250 words or less. Submissions are due on or before Monday, April 4, 2011. There is a limit of two submissions per person. All students who live in Franklin Lakes, or attend school in Franklin Lakes (including Indian Hills and Ramapo High Schools), are welcome to participate. Entries will be judged on creativity, clarity, polish, and overall impact. Winners will be announced during National Library Week, April 10 through 16. The Grand Prize is a $50 American Express Gift Card. Contest entry forms are available at the library and on the Teen Space on www.franklinlakeslibrary.org. Poems or written song lyrics may be submitted at the library or emailed to kate_thelibrarian@yahoo.com. Entrants should include the information requested on the entry form with each submission. Adult Writers Group seeks new members The Adult Writers Group of Franklin Lakes Public Library is open to those who wish to share their writing with others who write, and network for publishing ideas and writing methods. The group will meet on Dec. 22 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the library, 470 DeKorte Drive. New members are welcome. Contact Ron at ronrizio@yahoo.com. Scouts host Christmas Tree Sale Boy Scout Troop 34 of Franklin Lakes will hold a Christmas Tree Sale on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and on Sundays from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Franklin Lakes United Methodist Church at 454 Pulis Avenue. The sale will be held through Dec. 19. The Scouts will be selling nursery-grown Christmas trees, wreaths, and roping for the holiday season, and will be on hand to assist in the selection and loading of trees. Recreation offers men’s softball league Registration for the Franklin Lakes Recreation Men’s Softball League will be held Feb. 1 through March 15. The cost of registration is $800 per team. Games will be played on weeknights beginning in April. The season concludes in mid-July. ASA rules apply and ASA bats must be used. Our family has always appreciated the great comfort found in Midland Park and it has enhanced our efforts as parents to raise a family in a healthy environment. It has provided us a safe haven and support in molding our children with a healthy sense of values and community. This has enabled us to send them off into their own varied worlds, but they will always have a great guideline as to what makes a town and family work together.
