Township introduces sidewalk dining ordinance by John Koster The Wyckoff Township Committee has introduced an ordinance to permit bistrostyle sidewalk dining under municipal regulations and has scheduled an adoption hearing of the ordinance for Dec. 21. The long-awaited draft of the ordinance provides that the layout of sturdy tables and chairs not interfere with pedestrian or vehicular safety or with access by firefighting equipment and ambulances. “An unobstructed paved surface for pedestrian traffic at least six-feet wide shall be maintained upon any private sidewalk or sidewalk within the public right-of-way,” the ordinance states. All tables are to be located within 10 feet of the building improvement, which constitutes the subject food establishment. No chairs or tables may be located within 30 feet of the curb or paved portion of a county road. Hours of service are proposed as 7 a.m. until 10 p.m., with all tables and chairs removed and secured by 10:30 p.m. No additional signage in connection with the outdoor foodservice establishment is to be permitted. “Lighting servicing the outdoor dining shall be kept at the minimum necessary to ensure the safety of the public and patrons of the establishment,” the ordinance states. “No lighting provided specifically for outdoor dining shall spill onto adjacent residential properties.” The ordinance also bans exterior sound systems intended for the outdoor dining area, bans direct sales to people dining out of doors, and restricts service of alcoholic beverages to those establishments also providing food service. There was no audience comment at the introduction of the ordinance. Wyckoff Police Chief Benjamin Fox said he will once again provide a foot patrol for areas of the business community now through Christmas. “In previous years, the presence of a police officer on foot has been well received by both residents the officer interacts with and by business owners in our community,” Chief Fox wrote last week to the Wyckoff Township Committee. “Foot patrols will be periodic as manpower allows, and I believe that they provide a heightened sense of security during the busy holiday shopping season.” Chief Fox added that shoppers should take precautions, including locking their Chief continues foot patrols until Christmas Rooney (continued from page 5) various organizations linked to the environment and horsemanship. The chief added that business owners should always report suspicious persons to the police department, take protective measures when taking cash to or from the bank, and have the necessary measures in place to deal with credit card fraud. “The business community is an important part of any municipality, and I’m glad to be able to provide the foot patrol officers in our efforts to make this a happy and safe holiday shopping season,” he said.
