Midland Park December 15, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES I • Page 11 The Midland Park Zoning Board of Adjustment last week put off a decision on the telecommunications monopole proposed for the Sears shopping center on Godwin Avenue to hear further testimony on alternative technology. Radio frequency experts will return to the board’s January meeting to testify as to whether DAS technology could provide the same level of signal that could be expected from a monopole. The DAS option had been briefly touched upon earlier in the hearings and had not been fully explained. Board members said the visual impact of the “flagless flag” structure was more than they had expected so they wanted to explore in more detail other options to see if they would be viable. Under the current proposal, the antennas are housed in canisters at the top of the monopole so they blend in with the overall appearance of the exterior of the pole. The applicants’ RF expert, Glen Pierson, and Ron Graiff, the board’s expert, will present findings, testimony and their opinion at the board’s Jan. 12 meeting at 7:30 p.m. The meeting will be re-advertised since the board Zoning board postpones vote on ‘flagless pole’ had previously determined that all testimony was closed. Public input at this meeting will be limited to the RF issue. The applicants’ attorney asked that the board vote on the application following the conclusion of the additional testimony. Verizon Wireless and T-Mobil Northeast LLC have filed a joint application to erect a 120-ft high stealth tower antenna on the three-and-a-half-acre site. The property is zoned B-3, which allows business retail and office use. A use variance is needed, however, because cellular towers are permitted uses only on municipally-owned property. The Firehouse/DPW garage property on Greenwood Avenue is the only site in town zoned for such towers, and a 150-ft. tower has been there for more than a decade. The two companies had originally filed separate applications for 90-ft. towers, with T-Mobil seeking permission for its antenna in the parking lot of the adjacent building at 44 Godwin Ave. The board recommended the joint venture. The board also recommended increasing the height of the structure so as to be able to accommodate four, or possibly five, co-locators instead of two if the application is approved.
