Page 4 THE VILLADOM TIMES I • December 8, 2010 FLOW Area Board extends suspension by Frank J. McMahon The Ramapo Indian Hills Regional High School Board of Education has extended the suspension of one of three Ramapo High School students who was suspended in June for selling Xanax, a controlled dangerous substance, to another high school student. The board’s action was taken following a formal disciplinary hearing that was initiated against the student as a result of allegations that, in September, during the student’s first suspension period, the student was found to be in possession of Xanax while in a motor vehicle accident in Oakland. The Oakland Police Department charged the individual with operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs in connection with that accident. The student’s parents were provided with notice of the hearing that was held before the board, and of their right to be represented by counsel, to present evidence and witnesses on behalf of the student, to cross-examine any and all of the board’s witnesses, and to have a translator present at the board’s expense, but the parents waived those rights and stipulated to the account of the incident that led to the extension of the suspension. The student had been suspended for the remainder of the 2009-10 school year and through the first marking period of the 2010-11 school year, but the school board’s recent action has extended that suspension Terrific teamwork Police Officer Richard Osenbruck and The North Jersey Foundation for Safety’s ‘Otto the Auto’ recently visited Colonial Road School in Franklin Lakes to discuss pedestrian safety. The student’s reinstatement will be based on the student’s academic performance and progress, as evaluated and reported by the student’s home instructors, and the extent to which the student refrains from further engagement in conduct warranting expulsion or other discipline. During the period of suspension, individual counseling services and academic support will be made available to the student as appropriate, with the specific services offered being subject to the discretion of the district superintendent. In addition, during the time of suspension, the student may not be present on any of the school district’s campuses outside of, or during the regularly scheduled school day unless authorized by the superintendent. But, during the period of suspension, the student will be allowed to be present on the school district’s campuses with the express authorization of the superintendent to complete standardized testing, or to confer with guidance personnel for the sole purpose of completing college applications. The student will not, however, be permitted to participate in any athletic, co-curricular and/or extracurricular activities (continued on page 6) Paul Banach Construction, LLC Home Remodeling Waldwick • 201-689-0765 • Windows • Doors • Garage Doors • • Finish Carpentry • Crown Moldings, Cabinetry, Walk-In-Closets, etc... • Kitchen & Bathroom Renovations • Take advantage of the Energy Tax Credit in 2010 www.energystar.gov/index.cfm?c=products.pr_tax_credits Speak to your tax advisor to ascertain if you qualify, as these credits will make a project more economical for you!
