Town seeks grants for Spruce/Highwood and Greenwood
Midland Park is applying for NJ Department of Transportation grants to repave Greenwood Avenue and to reconstruct Spruce/Highwood avenues. “We think they are both going to score high. They are heavily traveled and are crucial transportation links,” said Borough Administrator Michelle Dugan. Capital Alternatives, the borough’s grant consultants, will prepare the applications as they have done for past NJDOT grants. Greenwood was totally reconstructed with NJDOT funds awarded in 1997 and 1998. The job was done in two phases because of the cost, since the project included major drainage work. The new application anticipates repaving the street from Birch Street to the Wyckoff border and delineating and paving the commuter parking area adjacent to the NJ Transit bus station. This area, available for resident-parking only for nine cars, is unimproved at the present time. The engineer’s estimate for the project is $365,000. The borough anticipates doing the work in two faces and is requesting $250,000 under the current application, with the resurfacing taking priority. The borough’s previous applications for Spruce/Highwood in 2008 and 2009 were not funded, but Dugan said the council felt it was worth trying again. “Improving that area will really make an impact,” said Dugan of the Spruce/Highwood proposal. The project would include drainage, curbing and resurfacing of the mile-long connector roadway. It is expected to cost $455,000. The borough plans to complete the work over two years and is seeking to start with the drainage work as the first phase for $250,000. No new sidewalks are proposed because of the limited width of the street and the additional cost. The existing sidewalks on both sides of Spruce between Pine and Prospect streets will remain. The work will also include improving the alignment of Spruce Street at the intersection with Pine Street, channeling traffic by the use of painted edge lines. The present condition creates sight distance problems and an almost-stop condition on a through street. (continued on page 16)
Streets named for veterans
All Midland Park veterans since World War I who died while on active duty are memorialized with a borough street named after them. Except for two. Now the borough council is taking steps to correct that situation. At the urging of Council President Patrick “Bud” O’Hagan, the council has agreed to rename to streets in Wortendyke that lead from Central Avenue to the park-andride for the two vets. The street that cuts through the Pete’s Corner parking lot (shown on the tax maps as formerly Franklin Avenue) will be renamed Swap Lane in memory of Garrett Swap, the borough’s first World War I casualty. He died on Sept. 17, 1918. The continuation of Madison Avenue, between Rosario’s Tratoria and the MedWel office will be named for Harry Streelman. He died on Feb. 5, 1919. “I noticed last memorial Day that there were two on the Honor Roll that had been overlooked, so we are taking care of it,” said O’Hagan. The enabling resolution is expected to be approved next month. O’Hagan said the VFW and the American Legion will be asked to handle the details of the dedication, which he said is expected to take place on Veterans Day.
