This week, 11 volunteers from Bergen County will travel to New Orleans to join hundreds of others at “Fifty for Five,” a five-day event to rebuild 50 homes, leading up to the fifth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. The event is sponsored by Rebuilding Together, the nation’s leading nonprofit working to preserve affordable homeownership. The local team includes Ridgewood couple Mary Lou Posten and Wayne Brewster. Other members of the team are Thomas Ela of Wyckoff, Alison Keenan, Colette Lasalle, Nancy Mecca, Alfred Nebiar, Ruth Nebiar, Mark Sciacca, JoEllen VanderVliet, and Robert Williams. The volunteers will spend five days in the Chantilly neighborhood of New Orleans, working on homes destroyed by hurricanes in 2005. Posten, a past Rebuilding Together Bergen County board member, and her husband have worked on many local RTBC projects and made previous trips to Louisiana with Rebuilding Together. Gulf helps bring Rebuilding Together closer to its goal of rehabilitating 1,000 homes in the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Currently, nearly 800 homes have been completed. “Fifty for Five” is a large-scale example of Rebuilding Together’s ongoing commitment to the renewal of New Orleans and the Gulf Coast. The event also seeks to spark national attention for the needs of the region’s low-income homeowners.
Rebuilding Together Bergen County is one of more than 200 local affiliates of the national organization. Begun in 1998 as an initiative of the Junior League of Bergen County, RTBC has rehabilitated 193 homes in 44 Bergen County towns in its 12-year history. (continued from page 10) flue pipe is connected and in good condition. If you have a water boiler, verify the indicator on the pressure gauge falls into the normal range (12-15 pounds cold). If you have a steam heating system, check the water in the sight glass. If it is low, turn on the water supply valve to bring the water level up to the half-way mark. Turn off the valve. For warm-air furnace systems, check and replace dirty air filters. Verify the blower door is tightly closed and correctly secured. Verify that all controls, valves, and electrical switches are in the “on” position. Start it up. If the unit is equipped with a pilot, confirm that it’s lit. If the pilot light is out, follow the instructions on the heating unit to relight it. Let the pilot light burn a few minutes before continuing. Many units use a form of automatic ignition. Review the starting instructions located on the unit before continuing. Set each thermostat mode to “heat” (if equipped) and raise the setting five degrees above room temperature. The heating system should start within a minute or two. Let the unit run a few minutes to ensure it’s operating normally and then return all controls to their previous settings. PSE&G will help customers light the pilot free of charge through Sept. 12. PSE&G will charge $25 for this service from Sept. 13 through Oct. 31. If the system is not working properly, PSE&G customers may call the utility, at 1-800-350-PSEG (7734) or visit www.pseg.com to register their account and schedule repair services online for assistance from appliance service technicians. The utility is also asking customers to keep their homes and yards safe, well lit, and free of clutter so workers can safely access the meters and equipment. Customers are asked to warn PSE&G workers of any hazardous conditions, such as loose steps or railings; make sure the path leading to meters is clear and properly lit, especially stairways; keep dogs and other pets secured away from workers and service areas; keep the area around the furnace, meter, and appliances free and clear of clutter; and trim bushes and shrubs in the vicinity of meters located outdoors.

(continued from page 5) The roadway, which varies in width, will be paved at a uniform width of 29 or 30 ft. NJDOT requires a minimum road width of 25 ft. to qualify for the grant, and at least 28 ft. are needed to provide parking. New curbs on both sides of Spruce will delineate the edge of the pavement for added safety and to control drainage flow and thus avoid flooding of roadway and private property. Spruce Street residents have been complaining about flooding for years. The development, known as “The Estates”, was built after World War II with no storm drainage system. A number of years ago the borough provided relief to the worst-affected area by channeling storm water down the ravine to Monroe Street in Ridgewood.
