August 18, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES I • Page 5 Midland Park Midland Park Borough officials hope that new signs posted at the recently-refurbished basketball courts adjacent to the DePhillips Center off Dairy Street will adequately control the use of the courts. Residents have complained of the increased activity in the area. “Once the signage is up, it should alleviate the situation. Then everyone around can police them,” said Councilman Scott Pruiksma during last week’s council meeting. “The courts are getting tremendous use, and that’s great,” he added. The signs would indicate that use of the courts is limited to basketball, with play allowed from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and Sunday hours from noon until dusk. Play would be limited to one hour if others are New signs will delineate rules for court use waiting. No profanity, suggestive language or aggressive behavior will be tolerated. The sign would also ask that users be respectful of neighboring properties. The number of the applicable ordinance(s) would also be posted on the signs. Two or three residents whose properties adjoin the courts have called police over the summer months to report play or suspicious cars after 9 p.m., organized activities and the use of foul language. One resident of Woodside Avenue said neighbors had been promised the courts would be used for pick-up games not for league play, yet he said he had witnessed organized games on more than one occasion. “They ran a pick-up league and it went over very well; but more went on than they represented,” explained Pruiksma, the recreation liaison. “The players were very good once they were made aware of the concerns. They even deflated the balls some so they would make less noise.” The improvised tournament ran twice a week for three weeks. Pruiksma said that the 9 p.m. cut off is consistent with the use of the DePhillips Center, which has a monitor on duty until that time who can patrol the courts as well.
