Balance is key. Balance is key. DVDs (continued from Restaurant page) “The Good, The Bad, The Weird” (IFC Films) takes place in 1930s Manchuria. Greed is rampant. In the opening sequence, a manic outlaw (Lee Byung-hun) is trying to steal a treasure map from a fast-moving train. But a nasty holy man (Song Kang-ho) beats him to it and makes off with the prize. Enter a determined bounty hunter (Jung Woo-sung) who is on a mission of his own. Chinese gangsters, the Japanese army, and rival factions also set out in pursuit of the mysterious map, leading to an action-filled showdown in the desert. Combining the structure of “The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly” with martial arts and a historical setting, “The Good, The Bad, The Weird” is one of the most expensive films ever made in South Korea. It goes beyond classic Westerns with its incredible stunts and nearly nonstop action. Director Kim Jee-woon has a flair for creating exciting sequences with character prototypes that have been seen before but are still fun to watch. Special features of this R-rated movie include featurettes, and cast and director interviews. “Skellig: The Owl Man” (Image Entertainment), based on David Almond’s children’s novel, weaves together honesty and whimsy. Young Michael (Bill Millner) is intelligent and impressionable, and he hates life. His new home is shabby and embarrassing. He has grown distant from his family. Friendless, he is a prime target for bullies at school. To make matters worse, his baby sister is very sick. Things look brighter when Michael discovers a strange occupant in the backyard garage: Skellig (Tim Roth). Downtrodden, hopeless, and an all-around grouch, Skellig eats bugs, looks gray, and rarely moves from his corner of a shed. He also has a remarkable feature: atrophied wings wrapped around his back. The movie works for a while as a mystery. Viewers wonder who or what Skellig is, and Roth gives a quite effective performance. The story often lacks logic, but is consistent within the parameters it sets, and it is very unusual. The look of the movie resembles the Harry Potter films, with rich textures and attention to detail. But setting up a bizarre situation is challenging for young people, and that is the film’s target audience. The best value of the week, at a list price of $14.99, is “Legends Series: Alfred Hitchcock” (Mill Creek Entertainment), a four-disc sampling of the work of the master director packaged in a cool tin container. None of Hitchcock’s American films are here, but some of the best of his British movies are: “The Thirty-Nine Steps” (1935), “Young and Innocent” (1937), and “The Lady Vanishes” (1938). Also included are four seldom-seen silent films, including “The Lodger,” (1926), a creepy telling of the Jack the Ripper tale. There are also a couple of episodes of “Alfred Hitchcock Presents,” including “The Cheney Vase” (1955), starring Darren McGavin, and “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice,” written by Robert Bloch and starring Brandon De Wilde and Diana Dors. This episode never aired on TV during the show’s original run because the network censors found it too ghoulish. The single extra is 55 minutes of Alfred Hitchcock movie trailers.
