The Bergen Volunteer Medical Initiative, Inc. will mark the first anniversary of the opening of the BVMI Healthcare Center at the “Celebrating the Culture of Caring” reception and buffet supper set for Thursday, Nov. 4. The event will be held at 6 p.m. at the Stony Hill Inn, Hackensack. All five Bergen County hospitals and two corporations will be honored for their significant support in making it possible for BVMI to provide free primary and preventive medical care to residents of Bergen County who earn between 100 percent and 200 percent of the prevailing federal poverty guideline and have no health insurance of any kind. The following honorees will receive BVMI’s Community Leadership Award: Bergen Regional Medical Center, Joseph S. Orlando, president and chairman of the board; Englewood Hospital and Medical Center, Douglas A. Duchak, president and chief executive officer; Hackensack University Medical Center, Robert C. Garrett, president and chief executive officer; Holy Name Medical Center, Michael Maron, president and chief executive officer; and The Valley Hospital and Valley Health System, Audrey Meyers, president

Ludwig, chairman and chief executive officer; and Quest Diagnostics, Surya Mohapatra, Ph.D., chairman of the board and chief executive officer. “The volunteer physicians, nurse practitioners, and registered nurses who deliver care at the BVMI Healthcare Center are guided by a “Culture of Caring” -- a humanist approach to treatment,” said Norma S. Gindes, MSW, executive director of BVMI. “We are pleased to publicly acknowledge the collaborative efforts of our honorees in making our work possible.” The BVMI Healthcare Center is located at 241 Moore Street, Hackensack. Since opening in late November 2009, 350 patients have been seen in 850 visits. “The positive outcomes have been impressive, and with the help of those we plan to honor at the “Celebrating the Culture of Caring” event, we have been able to make life-saving interventions and reduce unnecessary health care dollars spent on emergency care,” stated Bernard Weinstein, chairman of the BVMI Board of Trustees. A commemorative journal and auction are planned. For sponsorship and advertising opportunities, or to request an invitation, contact Norma Gindes at (201) 342-2478, extension 8484 or by e-mail at

We are desperately looking for our little lost guy we had just adopted from a rescue. Jasper was rescued from a puppy mill in Kentucky and never knew what it was like to be loved. He is a very tiny skittish guy who we adopted on Sunday, August 8, 2010. While at my parents’ home in Oakland that evening he escaped when his leash slipped from my hand and he ran in to the woods. Poor Jasper doesn’t even know his name since he was only a number at the puppy mill. He is a 4 year old Papillion and was last seen on Sunday night running through the woods in the Circle Ave area of Franklin Lakes, just off Franklin Ave. We are thinking he may have made his way into Mahwah since he has not been seen since Sunday night, or someone has

taken him in. We would hope that he is safe and in someone’s care. Please call (201) 825-0936 if you have seen him. We are heartbroken. Thank you. Kathy Errico, Mahwah.
