Midland Park August 11, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES I • Page 11 A Midland Park business is seeking to convert the second floor of a detached garage on its Cross Avenue property into a training room for the business. The application was in front of the Midland Park Planning Board at its July meeting. Board members Mayor Joseph Monahan, Councilwoman Nancy Peet and Borough Administrator Michelle Dugan recused themselves because the applicant is a borough councilman. Bernard Holst, owner of Horizon Termite and Pest Control, with offices at 45 Cross Ave., recently purchased the adjoining single-family house in the B-1 zone, proposing to turn the home into a conforming office use. “There will be no change to the outer appearance, outside of the required handicapped parking. The property will be improved. There will be more plantings. There will be no big sign,” Holst responded to a neighbor’s question. Holst proposes no change to the footprint of the existing buildings. The main house will be renovated to house three offices on the second floor, with minor renovations to the first floor and no façade changes except for new Borough business seeks to add training room shutters. The roof of the existing one-and-a-half story garage would be raised, making the total height of the building 25 feet, where 16 feet are allowed by ordinance. Attorney Les Andersen said, however, that the existing garage is already higher than the ordinance allows, noting that the neighboring garage is three feet taller than the one his client proposes. The proposal provides parking for 19 cars, even though only 13 are required by ordinance. Holst said he wants additional parking so that when employees come for training from his other facilities, they will not impact the regular operation of the business. He said he wants to make sure there is ample parking on premises. Four proposed spaces had been eliminated to provide for an increased buffer area. Engineer Charles Osterkorn of Wyckoff said that a two-way driveway would lead around the garage to the parking area in the rear. The driveway would be paved to the rear line of the garage, with the lot itself graveled. Drainage would be handled by two large seepage pits. Osterkorn said that since the 72-ft. by 230-ft. property slopes slightly to the rear, a 2-ft. high berm along the rear of the lot would be able to capture any overflow from a more severe storm. The hearing on the application will continue at the board’s Aug. 16 meeting. Garage proposed for renovations. Pet owners who have failed to renew their cat or dog license for the year will soon be getting a visit from an animal control person unless a license is secured. A $10 late fee will be charged. The regular cost of a license is $10 per pet, with an additional $3 charge if the pet is not spayed or neutered. Licenses may be obtained at borough hall, 280 Godwin Ave., Monday through Thursday Pet license deadline has passed between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.; until 3 p.m. on Fridays. Rabies shots must be good until March 2011. Persons who no longer have a pet to be licensed should contact borough hall so that the record can be updated, otherwise the owner will have to pay the cost of a summons issued because the pet will still be listed on the active list.
