Page 8 THE VILLADOM TIMES I • April 28, 2010 Wyckoff Outreach to benefit school in Juarez, Mexico Teachers and students from a school in Juarez, Mexico, will be visiting Wyckoff for some teacher training at Lincoln School during the first week of May through a program sponsored by Powerhouse Christian Church. “In 2004, Touch the World began work on a school (grades K-6) in the very impoverished community of Filipe Angeles in Juarez, Mexico. At the moment, Juarez is a very violent city, but we’re very much engaged there,” said The Rev. Jeffrey Boucher, senior pastor of Powerhouse Christian Church in Wyckoff. “Today we have 115 children attending. The school is a co-op and has made a significant change there in the community…Public education in Mexico is not a right. There is a cost of approximately $30 per month per child. Most of the community cannot afford this. We are bringing up six of the teachers and two students for additional teacher training. Mary Orr, principal of Lincoln School, is leading the charge to hose these teachers and provide the latest in best practices in education. We will have the teachers at Lincoln School every day from May 3 through 7.” On May 8, the school will offer a community event that will have merchandise from Juarez, child sponsorship opportunities, and other opportunities for residents of Wyckoff to learn more about the challenges and opportunities in Juarez.
