Midland Park April 28, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES I • Page 3 Midland Park voters last week approved the 2010-11 school budget by a nearly two-to-one margin and wrote in the names of three candidates to fill the vacancy on the ballot. With 28 percent of the borough’s 4,857 registered voters casting ballots, incumbent trustee Sandra Criscenzo retained her seat on the nine member board, and newcomers Rich Formicola and Brian McCourt were elected to new three-year terms. Criscenzo and Formicola, whose names appeared on the election ballot, received 900 and 902 votes, respectively. McCourt received 240 write-in votes; Ilya Maslov polled 57 votes and Joseph Rizzo garnered eight votes. The $18,570,806 operating school budget was approved with 871 yes votes and 443 no votes. The amount to be raised by taxation to support the budget, $16,818,459, is up 4 percent. A house assessed at $300,000, the borough’s average, will see an increase in taxes for school purposes only of $246 next year. Municipal and county taxes are additional and have yet to be determined. The district lost $1,150,000 in state aid for next school Voters approve budget; approve write-in candidate year, which prompted members of the Midland Park Education Association and the district’s administrators to agree to a salary freeze for the 2010-11 school year. The board also made reductions in all areas, eliminating six full-time and eight part-time positions and partially reducing 17 positions. The graduation requirement for 129 credits will be dropped to 120. Seniors will need to take a minimum of 29 credits instead of 34. Criscenzo, a nine-year borough resident, has been on the board for three years. She is an elementary school teacher with the Livingston School System and a clinical faculty member at Montclair State University. She is active in the elementary and high school PTAs, the Performing Arts Parents Association and the Boosters Club. She is a Brownie leader and a past cheerleading coach. Formicola, a 20-year resident, is a graduate of Bergen Community College and Chubb Institute. He is vice president of technical services for Merrill Lynch/Bank of America. He has been active with many recreational and school organizations, particularly through his hobby of photog- raphy and coaching. He is the current president of the Midland Park Softball and the Midland Park Basketball associations, positions from which he is stepping down in August after seven years. McCourt is a lifelong Midland Park resident and a graduate of Midland Park High School. He is vice president and controller for Spencer Savings Bank in Elmwood Park. Long active in sports, he is a past president of Midland Park Softball Association, served five years as vice president of the Midland Park Soccer Association and has coached softball, basketball and soccer for the in-town and travel programs. An avid runner who can often be seen in town and in neighboring towns, he has participated in about 25 marathons over the past 25 years. The board’s reorganization meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, April 27 at 8 p.m. A new superintendent of schools, Dr. Marie Cirasella, is expected to be formally appointed at that time.
