Franklin Lakes April 21, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES I • Page 9 GOP council slate to run unopposed in primary by Frank J. McMahon The candidates nominated by the Franklin Lakes Republican Club will run unopposed in the June 8 primary election. Councilman Frank Bivona was the lone Republican candidate to file a nominating petition for the position of mayor, and incumbent Republican Councilwoman Nathalie Lota and Frank Pedone were the only candidates to file for the two available council seats. Pedone is running in place of incumbent Councilman Steven Marcus, who decided not to seek reelection. Bivona and his wife Maureen have been residents of Franklin Lakes for 15 years and they have two children, ages 15 and 17. He received a bachelor’s degree from Adelphi University and has been active in the borough’s recreation programs as a coach of girls’ and boys’ softball, baseball, and basketball. He has also been active with the Academy of the Most Blessed Sacrament where he has served on the advisory board and co-directed the school’s basketball program. Recently retired, his prior work experience was primarily in the bond insurance business where he worked with municipalities country-wide on the issuance of debt obligations. For the last five years, he was chief In Home executive officer of FGIC Corporation. Lota graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1987 with a bachelor’s degree in biology and a minor in chemistry. While studying at USC, she played on the golf team for four years. Upon graduation, she attended the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, New Jersey Dental School and graduated in 1991 with her doctoral degree. She subsequently entered a one-year general practice residency at Saint Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center in Paterson. After completing her residency, she was asked to stay on at the hospital where she treated the employees and their families and served the indigent population of Paterson. She is a lifetime resident of Bergen County and has two children. One of her children is a freshman at Immaculate Heart Academy and the other is in the seventh grade at the Academy of the Most Blessed Sacrament, where Lota has served as president of the Home-Academy Partnership and on the parish-school advisory board. Pedone is a current elected member of the Republican County Committee. He was president of the borough’s Republican Club in 2006 and has been an officer of that club from 2007 to the present. He has lived in the borough since 1999. Until he retired this year, he was president and chief executive officer of Infotech Systems, a company that deals with computer retrieval. Prior to that, he operated Pedone Associates, an executive search firm he created. He has also been vice president of listed trading for Lumbard Nelson and a research analyst for Donaldson & Generette. Mayor Maura DeNicola did not file for reelection, and the slate of candidates she reportedly supported for mayor and council failed to file nominating petitions by last week’s deadline. DeNicola has filed as a candidate for Bergen County Freeholder on the Republican ticket. DeNicola has recently been critical of the council. She has complained about the budget that was recently introduced, and observers believed that critique was a prelude to a campaign for her slate of candidates for mayor and council. It had been widely reported that one borough resident would seek the mayor’s seat, while two others would have sought the two seats on the council. Their candidacies would have reportedly violated an agreement between the borough’s Republican Club and DeNicola brokered by Bergen County Republican Organization Chairman Robert (continued on page 15) PERSONAL TRAINING • Flexible Scheduling • Nutrition Guidance • Sports Specific Training • Men, Women, Children & Couples With Brad NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED LEADER IN CONTEMPORARY VARICOSE VEIN TREATMENT Lose 20 lbs in 10 Weeks Insured Degreed & Certified For Free Consultation call: TONE UP/LOSE FAT/ FEEL GREAT 201-925-0381 YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD NEWSPAPER CHUBACKVEINCENTER A NEW STANDARD OF VEIN CARE 265 Ackerman Ave. Ridgewood, NJ 201-693-4330 Offer includes exam, dental cleaning and complete digital x-rays.
