Former trustee charged with burglary at pharmacy
by John Koster Matthew Cole, 42, until recently a member of the Wyckoff Board of Education, has been charged with the November 29, 2009 burglary of Miller’s Pharmacy after a lengthy and detailed investigation. The pharmacy was entered through a rear door at 7:40 p.m., and the suspect was photographed by interior video cameras. The photograph – the suspect’s face was largely obscured by a baseball hat – was published in local newspapers and circulated by police officers. The investigation also involved DNA testing of a glove dropped during the burglary and comparisons of those DNA test results with Cole’s DNA. After the results of the DNA test were released, Detective Sergeant Joseph Soto signed complaints charging Cole with the burglary and the theft of prescription drugs. Cole voluntarily turned himself in on April 7, and was photographed and fingerprinted. He was released in his own recognizance. Det. Sgt. Soto charged Cole with stealing approximately 361 Oxycontin pills, a prescription pain reliever which is known to be highly addictive. A citizen who referred Cole to the police as a suspect in December 2009 is being considered for a reward from a group called Rx Patrol, which assists law enforcement officers with thefts from pharmacies. Once that citizen’s tip came in, police focused the investigation focused on Cole, who was a member of
the Wyckoff Board of Education when the burglary took place. He recently resigned his seat. Wyckoff Police Chief Benjamin C. Fox thanked Wyckoff Detective Bureau officers Soto and Detective Michael Musto for their investigative efforts in solving this crime. The investigation was also conducted with the assistance of Detective Robert Farulla of the Bergen County Sheriff’s Department under the direction of Sheriff Leo McGuire, and Assistant Prosecutor Martin Delaney of the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office under the direction of Prosecutor John L. Molinelli.
