Wyckoff April 7, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES I • Page 5 Education veteran announces write-in campaign by John Koster Wyckoff resident Thomas Rousseau, a 37-year resident of the township, has stepped forward as a write-in candidate for the Wyckoff Board of Education election that previously featured a one person shortage of declared candidates seeking election to the three available seats. Rousseau served two terms on the Wyckoff Board of Education in the 1980s and said that it was the present situation – not enough candidates to fill all the Wyckoff Board of Education seats – that motivated him to accept the role of write-in candidate. Driver charged with aggravated assault A 60-year-old Rivervale man who was arrested after a three-car accident on Russell Avenue near Route 208 on March 25 was charged with aggravated assault, driving while under the influence of alcohol, and reckless driving after the other two drivers complained of back and neck injuries. Police report that the first two cars had stopped on Russell Avenue when the third car, driven by the accused drunk driver, struck the rear end of the second car and pushed it into the first car. Patrol Officer Kevin Pinches arrested the 60-year-old driver and the man was charged with aggravated assault, which is automatic when an intoxicated driver causes an injury as part of a collision. The man also refused a breath test and failed to produce insurance or registration information. He was released to the custody of his wife, and faces an appearance in municipal court. Another crash reported on March 12 also reportedly involved intoxicated driving. A 47-year-old Ramsey man struck the rear of another vehicle as it was turning at the intersection of Russell Avenue and Wyckoff Avenue at 10:12 p.m. The driver was charged with driving while intoxicated and careless driving. He was released to a friend and will appear in municipal court. Patrol Officer Brenda Groslinger made the arrest. Two days later, another driver led to some consternation when he thought he was following a friend, but was following a stranger. A motorist who wondered why he was being followed by a 26-year-old man from Paterson called Wyckoff police for help. Since the driver being tailed was near the police station, the police told him to drive into the (continued on page 12) “Americans have to tighten their belts in the present economic emergency,” Rousseau said. “Hysteria must not be allowed to damage the infrastructure of our community. Administration, teachers, government officials, and citizens must find less expensive ways while still maintaining quality in the pursuit of education.” A combat veteran of the Korean War, Rousseau is also a veteran of 35 years of teaching, mostly in New Milford and later in Ridgewood. He attended Potsdam and later Bucknell University, and has received National Science Foundation grants through New York University. He has a principal’s license and has taught at the elementary, middle school and college levels. He has also directed the girls’ fencing team at Ramapo High School and in New Milford. Under his direction, the Ramapo team became state champions. Rousseau and his wife, Jill, attend Grace Methodist Church in Wyckoff. They raised three grown children who attended Wyckoff schools. He is a former recreation baseball coach and served as a Cub Scoutmaster for Pack 309.
