Friends seek books for sale From April 17 through May 8, the Friends of the Midland Park Memorial Library will collect gently used books for the group’s upcoming Book Sale. The sale will be held May 14 and 15. Donations will be accepted during library hours. Residents are reminded to not leave donated books outside the library. Items may include: fiction, non-fiction, hardcover and softcover books, CDs, DVDs, books on CD, and videotapes. Please note that the following items cannot be accepted: magazines, encyclopedias, textbooks, vinyl records, cassette tapes, Reader’s Digest Condensed Books, or materials more than five years old on the topics of business, finance, computers, travel, health, child care, or education. Recipe tasting luncheon set The Midland Park United Methodist Church’s Annual Recipe Tasting Luncheon has been scheduled for April 22 at 12:30 p.m. Women from the church will be offering homemade specialties and an opportunity to purchase the recipes. Luncheon is $7 per person. The church is located at 269 Godwin Avenue. Board of education to meet The Midland Park Board of Education will meet at 8 p.m. on April 13. The session will be held in the August C. DePreker Media Center at Highland Elementary School. Tai chi offered to seniors The Northwest Bergen Regional Senior Center in Midland Park is currently offering tai chi on Mondays from 4 to 5 p.m. and Wednesdays from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. The cost is $5 per class. Tai chi, an integrated mind-body exercise method, has been practiced in China for thousands of years. This ancient Chinese art improves the flow of life energy in the body by combining specific movements and postures with breathing and focused attention. Practicing tai chi on a regular basis has been shown to improve balance, help with the functioning of every system of the body, decrease pain, and enhance quality of life. PTA sponsors Cultural Awareness Program As part of its Cultural Awareness Program, the Midland Park High School PTA is sponsoring “Make a Difference” on Tuesday, April 13 at 7 p.m. Mountain climber Lori Schneider will provide a media presentation of her quest to climb the highest peak on each continent after she was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. Schneider will share her experiences and remind the audience to live out their dreams and to climb above their perceived limitations. The free presentation is appropriate for all ages and will be held in Memorial Hall at Midland Park High School. Baseball association to meet The Midland Park Baseball Association will meet April 7 at 7:30 p.m. at the Highland School Media Center/ Library. All coaches and parents who are interested are welcome. Opening Day Parade planned The annual Baseball and Softball Associations’ Opening Day Parade and Ceremony will be held on Saturday, April 10. Baseball and softball players and coaches will meet at the municipal building parking lot at 8:30 a.m. The parade will step off from the municipal lot at 9 a.m. and end at the Veterans Memorial Field (Junior Field) on Dairy Street. Special needs program offered Registration for the Midland Park Recreation’s Me & My Shadow program has begun. This small group program is for children in grades two through six and is directed by Lori Dent and assisted by adult and teen volunteers. It is designed to meet the unique needs and abilities of special needs children through non-competitive games, music, and arts-and-crafts. Classes meet on Saturdays from 10 to 11 a.m. from April 10 through May 1 at the DePhillips Community Center, 50 Dairy Street. The registration fee is $20 per child with a maximum of $25 per family. Auxiliary fashion show/luncheon tickets on sale The Midland Park Branch of the Valley Hospital Auxiliary will hold its 41st annual luncheon/fashion show on Tuesday, April 20. The popular event will take place at the Grand Conservatory of the Brownstone House in Paterson beginning at 11:30 a.m. Fashions by Dress Barn of Preakness will be modeled by auxiliary members. The event is always a sell-out, so early reservations are recommended. Tickets are $35, $7 of which is tax deductible. All high school seniors residing in Midland Park who plan to attend an institution of higher learning are encouraged to apply. Seniors graduating from Midland Park High School may contact their guidance counselor for an application. All other students may pick up an application from the Midland Park Public Library at 250 Godwin Avenue, Midland Park. Scholarships will be awarded based on the applications submitted, which will be at the sole discretion of the Midland Park Lions Club. All applications are due April 12. College admissions process outlined Deborah Shames, a state certified counselor with almost 20 years of college admissions experience, will offer a program on the college admission process on Wednesday, April 14 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Midland Park Memorial Library. Shames will discuss how to select the right colleges, how to make the most of a college visit, what financial aid opportunities are available, and other topics. Golf benefit announced The Midland Park Fire Department will host its second Charity Golf Outing at the Black Bear Golf Club in Franklin on Monday, May 10. Breakfast will be at 8 a.m. followed by a 9 a.m. tee time. The cost is $125 per player or $500 for a foursome, which includes continental breakfast, cart, 19th hole cash bar, and awards lunch.
