Hoffman to speak at Barnert Dr. Joel Hoffman, an internationally regarded teacher, author, and translator of Hebrew and the Bible, will speak at The Barnert Temple and Center for Lifelong Learning in Franklin Lakes on April 12 from 7 to 9 p.m. The premise of Dr. Hoffman’s work is that, over the course of many centuries, translations of the Bible have obscured understanding and appreciation of the original text. In his presentations and writings, he provides an authoritative account of significant mistranslations and shows how new translation methods can give readers their first glimpse into what the Bible really means. Hoffman is the chief translator for the popular 10volume series, “My People’s Prayer Book” (winner of the National Jewish Book Award), and for “My People’s Passover Haggadah.” He is also the author of “In the Beginning” and “And God Said: How Translations Conceal the Bible’s Original Meaning.” Hoffman also writes a biweekly column on Hebrew for the Jerusalem Post. This event is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Barnert Temple at (201) 848-1800, or visit www.barnerttemple.org.
