Ramsey Run draws enthusiastic crowd; OEM assists
Member Steve Adams, George Halpin, and Jackie Gersht manned an aid station in front of Ramsey Borough Hall. Veteran members Rob Halpin, and his father Bob Halpin, took fixed traffic posts at Woodland and Furman avenues, and Furman and Darlington avenues. Ramsey Mayor Christopher Botta, who was on the course with his wife Lisa, thanked the OEM members for their participation. “One of our members radioed in a senior citizen who appeared to be disoriented and she was checked out by the Ramsey Ambulance Corps,” Adams reported. “The weather was perfect, our equipment and the 10-70 Repeater performed flawlessly, and our two new hams proved that we need to bring a constant influx of new amateur radio operators into the emergency services.”
Runners of all ages came out for 32nd Annual Jack McKeown Memorial 5K and 10K Run.

The Ramsey Police Department and the Ramsey Rescue Squad requested that the Ramsey Office of Emergency Management assist with the traffic flow and the safety of a record number of runners for the 32nd Annual Jack McKeown Memorial 5K and 10K Run. OEM members started assembling at the Emergency Operations Center at 7 a.m. After breakfast, they headed out to their posts. “While we were monitoring the police and public safety frequencies and had the capability of transmitting on them, we decided to use amateur radio equipment to coordinate among ourselves,” stated Michael Adams, Ramsey OEM coordinator and Bergen County ARRL interim EmComm coordinator. “Our two meter repeater of choice, as always, was the 10-70 repeater, which has excellent coverage.” The Net Control Station was manned by 15-year-old
Ramsey High School student Sawyer Rosenstein, a brand new ham. He was assisted by 13-year-old Nicholas Venturini. Adams said both did an outstanding job on their first assignment. Adams operated OEM Police Interceptor 420 and rode the routes with Deputy Coordinator Glen Karpovich. Deputy Coordinator Bruce Greenwood operated OEM Police Interceptor 421 and took a fixed traffic post at Darlington Avenue and Grove Street. Medical Coordinator Stephen Goeller, RN, took a fixed traffic post in OEM Police Interceptor 422 at North Central Avenue and Monroe Street with Thomas McCabe. Ramsey OEM Radio Officer Lou Janicek and Ralph Venturini transmitted on a portable station from the Ramsey Municipal Pool, the start/finish line. Ramsey Life
