Volunteers needed for ‘WinterFest’ program
Plans for Mahwah’s “WinterFest” are underway and the Mahwah Chamber of Commerce is looking for volunteers to help with the many duties of mounting this program. This year, the festival is scheduled to begin on Dec. 4, and end on Jan. 30, 2010. The festival will include charity 9-23-09 Joan from Janine drives, contests for adults and children, historical exhibits at the Mahwah Museum, and more. MahwahDayBanner(9-23-09) WinterFest is a family-friendly, nondenominational way 6 area .75 forcol xresidents to enjoy the season, to help those in need, and to bring the business and civic communities together. This celebration is for everyone who lives, works, and plays in Mahwah. WinterFest includes a full calendar of the public events offered in Mahwah. Some of the activities being planned include: Lighting Mahwah’s historic downtown, including Veterans Park and the Old Station Museum on Dec. 4, and a Pearl Harbor memorial service, with wreaths placed on the tombstone in Veterans Park, on Dec. 7. The Spread the Cheer program will involve a collection of food, coats, and toys for families in need, plus care packages for U.S. Marines serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. There will be business/residential lighting, essay, poster, and coloring contests, with prizes for the winners. An interfaith service will be at the Hindu Samaj Temple, and refreshments will follow. On Jan. 16, Heritage Day will feature special exhibits at the Mahwah Museum and Old Station. An opening ceremony will be held Dec. 4 and a closing ceremony will be held Jan. 30 at Veterans Park with a laser light show as a grand finale. Volunteers are needed. Eagle Scout candidate seeks pet care donations
Mahwah’s Ricky Courage of Boy Scout Venture Crew 1332 recently earned the Honor Scout Award at Camp Ockanickon in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Courage received this emblem for his positive influence on younger Scouts at a closing ceremony. While at the camp, Courage earned five merit badges, completing his badge requirements for the rank of Eagle Scout. He is now preparing for his Eagle Scout Project, a pet care donation drive at Ramapo Bergen Animal Refuge, Inc. (RBARI) in Oakland. The drive will take place at Don Bosco Prep on Franklin Turnpike in Ramsey on Oct. 5. Donations of pet food, pet supplies (including cat litter and dog leashes) and bedding (including sheets, towels, and blankets) may be dropped off Monday, Oct. 5 from 2 to 4 p.m. at Saint John’s Hall.
