Page 6 THE VILLADOM TIMES IV • September 9, 2009 Area Census decision delayed (continued from page 5) “One of the committee’s main initiatives is to encourage all municipalities to form a Complete Count Committee,” Brown wrote. “The local Complete Count Committee is a team of dedicated community leaders which will be tasked to develop and implement a locally-based outreach and awareness campaign for the 2010 census. This team’s primary focus is to promote the 2010 census across all sectors of our communities and to ensure that every resident in that area is counted.” Brown urged the mayors to form their own CCC to ensure that New Jersey reaps the benefits of an accurate census count and to pass a proposed resolution supporting the 2010 census. The proposed resolution states that an accurate census count is vital to the community and its residents’ wellbeing as this information helps planners determine where to locate schools, day care centers, roads, public transportation, hospitals, and other facilities. It also points out that more than $435 billion per year in federal and state funding is allocated to states and communities based, in part, on census data. That data also helps determine how many seats each state will have in the U.S. House of Representatives, and is often used for the redistricting of state legislatures, county and city councils, and voting districts. The resolution also points out that the 2010 census creates jobs that stimulate economic growth. If the resolution is passed by the council, the governing body would become a 2010 census partner. As such, the council would agree to support the goals and ideals of the 2010 census, and disseminate information to encourage those in the community to participate, encourage the community to place an emphasis on the 2010 census and participate in events and initiatives that raise overall awareness and ensure a full and accurate census, support census takers, and create or seek opportunities to collaborate with other like-minded community groups by participating in Complete Count Committees and/or using high-profile, trusted voices to advocate on behalf of the 2010 census.
