Mahwah September 9, 2009 THE VILLADOM TIMES IV • Page 3 Council names Phase V Sewer Assessment Commission by Frank J. McMahon Now that Phase V of the Mahwah Sanitary Sewer Project has been completed, and the construction cost has been determined, the Mahwah Council has appointed residents Ward Donigian, Gail Reynolds, and Donald Wasson to serve on the Phase V Sewer Assessment Commission. This group will assess the benefit of the sewer improvement project to the affected homeowners. The $6.5 million Phase V sewer project consisted of the construction of sanitary sewer connections and extensions in seven service areas of the township involving about 30 streets, 200 lots, 24,000 linear feet of sewer lines, and 25,000 linear feet of water lines that were installed at the same time in areas where it is cost effective. Donigian is a former councilman and is currently a member of the planning board and the recreation committee. He previously served on the township’s Phase IV assessment group. Reynolds is the current chairperson of the township’s Communications Cable Television Committee, and Wasson served on the township’s sewer assessment groups following the township’s Phase III and IV 4 sewer projects. Each commissioner will receive compensation of $3,000 upon completion of the commission’s final report and subsequent public hearing. The commission will determine the monetary value of the benefit that each property has received as a result of the installation of the sanitary sewer lines in order to determine the special assessment that will be levied against those properties. When the special assessments are determined, the property owners will receive a formal notice of the public hearings that will be conducted by the special assessment commission, at which time residents will have an opportunity to discuss the special assessments. It is expected that the owners of the properties receiving the new sewer service will receive one time special assessments of between $12,000 and $18,000. When the council confirms the final special assessments for the properties, the property owners will have the option to pay the assessment in one lump sum or in installments over a 10-ten year (continued on page 21) We are Fit Waltz Right Into Gibling’s… Dance Right Out!
