This month’s selection is Graham Greene’s “The Power and the Glory.” The novel portrays a vicious persecution of the clergy in Mexico, where a worldly priest is on the run. With the police closing in, his routes of escape are being shut off, but compassion and humanity force him along the road to his destiny, reluctant to abandon those who need him. Participants are urged to read the book before attending the meeting. Copies are available from the local library system and bookstores. Sponsored by the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Mahwah, the group aims to explore novels and other literary works with spiritual meaning in a relaxed atmosphere. The place is what used to be North America, now Norika, a vast toxic wasteland dotted with huge environmental domes that are enclaves of the monolithic corporations that have replaced governments. Piercy creates an extraordinary vision of the future and ties it to the past. Both the morning and evening adult book discussion groups are looking for new members.
