Mahwah student becomes National Merit Semifinalist
Mahwah High School student Alyse Volino has been named a National Merit Semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program. The National Merit Scholarship has now determined which of the 16,000 Semifinalists named in September 2009 have met all requirements to advance to Finalist standing in the competition. All Finalists will be considered for National Merit Scholarships to be offered in 2010. More than 1.5 million students in over 22,000 U.S. high schools entered the 2010 National Merit Scholarship Program when they were juniors by taking the 2008 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT), which served as an initial screen of program entrants. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists was designated on a state representational basis; the number of Semifinalists, which represents less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest scoring entrants in each state. The number of Semifinalists in a state is proportional to the state’s percentage of the national total of graduating seniors. About 90 percent of the Semifinalists are expected to become Finalists, and all Merit Scholars will be chosen from this exceptionally able group. Selection will be made on the basis of professional evaluations of the finalists’ abilities, accomplishments, and personal attributes considered important for success in rigorous college studies.
