Mahwah October 14, 2009 THE VILLADOM TIMES IV • Page 3 Council authorizes new lease for Mahwah Museum by Frank J. McMahon The Mahwah Council has adopted an ordinance that extends the area and length of the agreement between the township and the Mahwah Museum Society, Inc., a nonprofit corporation, to lease the Winter Building at 201 Miller Road next to the Fire Company #1 building. The building was formerly the location of the Mahwah Library. The new lease includes both the upper and lower floors of the building for a term of five years retroactive to July 1, 2009 and ending on June 30, 2014 at a rate of $100 per year with the understanding that the township’s Veterans of Foreign Wars organization will be able to use the lower level for meetings and other activities. The new lease will be valid for five years with two automatic five-year extensions unless either the township or the museum gives six months notice that either party wishes to discontinue the lease. The Mahwah Museum Society previously leased just the top floor of the building for $1 per year, with the VFW using the downstairs portion of the building for its meetings. The society requested a 10-year extension with two five-year options at the end of the 10-year lease in order to provide the degree of permanency society members felt was necessary in order to attract major exhibitors to the museum and to protect the monetary investment it has already made in the renovation of the building’s interior. The council concluded that there was no benefit to the township to grant a long-term lease of the property, although Mayor Richard Martel recognized that the museum had spent a lot of money on the building and that a long lease is important to anyone one who would lend items to the museum for display. Some council members said people would not loan items to a museum if it has a short lease and they expressed concern about attracting exhibits without permanence. But the consensus of the council was to supersede the current lease with a new five-year lease for both levels of the building with two five-year options and the right of either side to discontinue the lease with six months notice. The lease agreement also notes that the property would revert to the township if it ceased being used as a museum. The Mahwah Museum Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to educating township residents about the municipality’s history. The society is responsible for maintaining the Mahwah Museum Building at the intersection of Franklin Turnpike and Miller Road; The Old Station Museum at 1871 Old Station Lane, which is just west of the railroad station; and the Donald Cooper Railroad, which is located in the basement of the main building. The Mahwah Museum is open Saturdays and Sundays from 2 to 4 p.m. from September to May and at other times by appointment. The combined admission to the Museum and the Donald Cooper Railroad is $5 per adult, $3 per child, and $10 per family. Admission is free for Museum Society members. The Old Station Museum is open from 2 to4 p.m. on Sundays from June to October. Admission is free, but contributions are appreciated. Several times throughout the year, the society sponsors programs for the public focusing on different aspects of the township’s history. The main museum building has hosted exhibits exploring Mahwah’s farming past and the township’s involvement with the Washington/Rochambeau march to Yorktown. The museum also sponsored an exhibit entitled “The Great Estates of the Ramapo Valley from the Civil War through World War I.” SAT JEI Prep Prep NEW LOCATION!
