May 27, 2009 THE VILLADOM TIMES IV • Page 17 Mahwah Minutes Library hosts movies The Mahwah Library will continue showing movies on Thursday afternoons at 1:30 p.m. on the 10’ x 18’ screen in the Winter Room. The library now has a new high resolution digital projector and sound system. During the month of June the film series will celebrate Queen Elizabeth II’s birthday with films about historic Queens. The schedule follows: June 4, “Queen Christina”; June 11, “The Queen”; June 18, “The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex”; and on June 25, “Marie Antoinette.” These films are free. The library will provide popcorn and drinks. The library is at 100 Ridge Road. Summer Music Festival to begin As part of the eleventh season of the Mahwah Public Library’s Summer Music Festival, pianist Hyung Do Kim and violinist Ji Soo Kim will perform music by composers including Beethoven, Mozart, Chopin, Ravel, Paradis, and Bruch at the Mahwah Public Library on Wednesday June 3 at 7 p.m. Thirteen-year-old Hyung Do Kim has been studying the piano since the age of four. At the age of eight he made his concerto debut-performing Haydn’s “D Major Piano Concerto” with the Monroe Symphony Orchestra. As recitalist, he has appeared three times at Carnegie’s Weill Recital Hall, and at Steinway Hall, Mannes College Auditorium, Summit Music Festival, New York’s National Arts Club, and at the Tenafly JCC (in master classes with Yefim Bronfman and Robert McDonald). In December 2006, Hyung Do performed his debut recital at Merkin Recital Hall. His awards include top prizes at the New York Music Competition in 2003 and 2004, and at the Steinway Society Scholarship Competition in 2004 and 2005. In April 2005 he was awarded First Prize at the New York City Piano Teachers Congress Competition and recently awarded first place it the International Connecticut Music Competition and the Special Award at the Friday Woodmere Competition. He has appeared on WQXR Young Artists Showcase. Fifteen-year-old Ji Soo Kim has been studying the violin since the age of five. At nine, Ji Soo made her concerto debut performing Haydn’s “G Major Violin Concerto” and was recently invited to play Lalo’s “Symphonie Espagnole” with the Livingston Symphony Orchestra. In 2007, she won first prize in the Juilliard Pre-College Division performing the Bach “Double Concerto in D Minor.” In 2008, she won second prize at the New York Music Competition, resulting in a performance at Carnegie Hall. As recitalist, she has appeared many times in Paul Hall, Morse Hall, Peter Jay Sharp Theater in Juilliard, and Alice Tully Hall in Lincoln Center. She also performed in master classes with Philip Setzer at the Tenafly JCC, and Sylvia Rosenburg, Ani Lavafian, Vera Beths, members of the Daedalus Quartet and the Brooklyn Rider Quartet. This concert is free. No tickets are necessary. Seats are available on a “first come” basis. Doors will be closed with the concert begins. Latecomers will be admitted during any convenient breaks. Young Professionals plan meeting The Mahwah Regional Chamber of Commerce is hosting a gathering of its Young Professionals Network. The group will gather poolside on Wednesday, June 3, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Homewood Suites by Hilton, 375 Corporate Drive in Mahwah. Enjoy refreshments outside by the pool at this fun, informal meet-and-greet with other young professionals. A cash bar will be available. The primary goal of the YPN is to create a venue where young professionals can meet informally, without the constraints of a formal networking event. Unlike other networking groups, the YPN has no formal membership list, no dues, no compulsory attendance, and no registration fee. Apple Ridge group to meet The Apple Ridge Association will meet May 27 at 8 p.m. The meeting will be held in the clubhouse located at 400 Apple Ridge Boulevard in Mahwah. Auxiliary hosts High Tea The Mahwah Branch of the Valley Hospital Auxiliary will hold a High Tea on June 2, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the newly redecorated Bon Appétit at 180 Franklin Turnpike in Mahwah. Networking planned for local businesses The Mahwah Regional Chamber of Commerce will hold a business card exchange for members and non-members on Wednesday, May 27, from 6 to 8 p.m. at New Adventure Academy, 51 Island Road in Mahwah. This evening of business networking is hosted by New Adventure Academy, a daycare center that serves children from six weeks to six years old and hosts full-day care, preschool options and full day kindergarten. Enjoy light refreshments while learning about the school’s programs and network with members of the business community. Cost for Chamber members is $15 and $30 for non-members.
