Township’s school board reorganizes for 2009-10

McMahon The Mahwah Board of Education has reelected its president and vice president for the 2009-10 school year, and the four recently elected members of the board have taken their oaths of office. Patricia Shada was reelected as president, while Christine P Davis was reelected first vice president, and John F Dolan was reelected second vice president, all by unanimous votes of the board. The four newly elected members of the board are Candace Larson, Dolan and Davis, who were reelected to threeyear terms, and, Peter Wendrychowicz, who was elected to fill the remaining two years of Denise Heitman’s unexpired term. Heitman resigned from the board last November. The school board’s business administrator, Edward Deptula, advised that the unofficial results of the recent school board election resulted in 1,085 affirmative votes for the school district’s budget and 946 negative votes. In addition, Larson received 1,429 votes, Dolan received 1,428 votes, Davis received 1,385 votes, and Wendrychowicz received 914 votes. All the board’s existing bylaws, policies and regulations were readopted and the board’s meeting schedule was set with the twice monthly meetings to be held on Wednesday evenings at 7 p.m. at the administrative offices on Ridge Road next to the Joyce Kilmer Elementary School. The board also agreed to the following volunteer appointments of trustees. Suzanne Curry and Wendrychowicz will be the board’s representative and alternate, respectively, to the Bergen County School Boards Association. They will serve in the alternate positions as the board’s representatives to the association’s Legislative Committee. Curry will also be the board’s liaison to the Mahwah Schools Foundation. Davis will be the board’s representative on the Mahwah Thunderbird Scholarship Committee. Deptula was reappointed as the board’s business administrator/board secretary through June 30, 2010. He was also named the board’s qualified purchasing agent. The law firm of Schwartz, Simon, Edelstein, Celso & Kessler LLP of Morristown was appointed the board’s legal counsel through June 30, 2010 and Kenneth Sesholtz was appointed to be the board’s treasurer of school monies while TM Vrabel and Associates LLC of Denville was appointed the board’s auditing firm for the 2009-10 school year. Tokarski Millemann Architects LLC of Brick Township was appointed the district’s architectural firm for the purpose of additions, alterations, and improvements for the
2009-10 school year. Dr. Everett Schlam was appointed as the school physician and the firms of McCarthy & Forde LLC of Woodcliff Lake and LDP Consulting Group of Lambertville were appointed risk management firms for the district. Janet Riley Donahue, the assistant superintendent was appointed as the board’s affirmative action officer, Title IX coordinator, and Section 504 compliance officer. Scot Van Demark was appointed supervisor of buildings and grounds.

Betsy Ross Elementary School Students enjoy 2009 Math Day. The students learned by actually mixing, feeling, manipulating, and listening through games and workshops tailored to each grade level. Math Day was made possible with a grant from the Mahwah Schools Foundation.
