The fields were closed in early April while the artificial turf was being replaced. The artificial turf fields are being replaced with new, state-of-the-art monofilament fiber fields, certified lead free with an eight year warranty, according to Township Administrator Brian Campion. He said the fields will be the newest generation product with best-in-class engineering, and he pointed out that similar fields were chosen for installation at the Meadowlands, Rutgers University, Ohio State University, and Gillette Stadium, the home of the New football team. England Patriots The local fields were closed when the township reached a joint agreement with FieldTurf Tarkett, a Canadian firm which is the leading manufacturer of synthetic recreational surfaces, and the firm that installed the original artificial turf material on the fields, to immediately replace that athletic field surface based on concerns over long term product performance issues that user safety might affect in the future, Campion said. by Frank J. McMahon Fields at Continental Soldiers Park to reopen He explained that, during the course of routine maintenance, the township noticed what appeared to be possible shedding of fibers on the artificial turf covering the four athletic fields at the park. That turf was purchased in 2002 from FieldTurf Tarkett with a 10 year warranty. That created the concern that there may be possible safety risks to those using the fields from any premature wear and tear. Artificial turf fields were the center of public concern last summer when the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a health advisory concerning potential exposure to lead in artificial turf and provided recommendations and actions that could be implemented to minimize the risks associated with any such exposure. install and OK to play on.” Mahwah officials decided, however, to retest the fields at the park in accordance with the recommendations of the CPSC. In January, the results continued to indicate there was no apparent health risk with lead levels on these fields. Campion said Mayor Richard Martel and the council collectively agreed, nevertheless, that replacing the fields was the most prudent course of action given the overriding concerns with safety, the age of the existing fields, the limited time remaining on the warranty, and the superior new generation products now available. Martel emphasized when the fields were closed that the township’s objective has always been to make sure that Mahwah’s children have the safest facilities available. He said everything was being done to get the children back on the fields as soon as possible. The cost to replace the artificial field material will be approximately $560,000, but Campion estimated that new fields would have cost between $1.2 and $1.5 million upon termination of the present warranty. He explained that the negotiated cost of $560,000 will be funded out of the existing municipal open space trust fund and remaining authorized and unused capital funds, so there will be no impact on the township’s operating budget.
