Hermansen seeks nomination for freeholder’s seat
by Frank J. McMahon Mahwah Councilman Robert G. Hermansen has announced his intent to seek the Republican nomination for Bergen County Freeholder. Mayor Richard Martel and council members Lisa DiGiulio and John DaPuzzo expressed their full support for his candidacy. Hermansen has been a resident of Bergen County since 1983 when his family moved from Brooklyn to New Jersey, and he now lives in Mahwah. He has been married for 12 years and has four children, two of whom are of school age and attend the township’s public schools. He has worked as a financial advisor since graduating from Saint Bonaventure University in 1990 with a degree in finance, and he is currently employed by Wachovia Securities. He has been a registered Republican since 1986 and has been actively involved in the Bergen County Republican Organization since 1993. In 2006, he was elected to the Mahwah Council, where he currently serves as the council’s vice president. He also serves as liaison to the township’s board of education. As a member of the Cable Committee, he helped negotiate the township’s current franchise deal with Cablevision. He has worked with numerous charities and has served as vice president on the board of the North Jersey Philharmonic. He is currently a volunteer softball, basketball, and tee-ball coach in the Mahwah Recreation Department. Hermansen said he would continue to serve the township as a councilman, and he praised the township as the fifth lowest taxed town in Bergen County and 15th in the State of New Jersey. He also emphasized that Mahwah was ranked in the top 10 places to live in 2008 by NJ Monthly Magazine. Since he moved to Mahwah, he said many things have changed. Hermansen added that this is a difficult time for many people. “Many of our seniors and fellow residents who helped build this great county are being forced out of their lifelong homes due to increasing property taxes,” Hermansen said. “At the state and county level, we need to figure out ways to provide the necessary services and also keep our costs down. I believe that with my experience in serving the town of Mahwah I can help figure out a solution on how to keep our taxes low.” Hermansen advised that over the past two weeks he has been stating his case to Republican elected officials and county committee members, whose job it is to choose the party’s candidates. On March 19, all of the county committee members and elected Republican officials in the county will chose the nominees who will be placed in the Republican organization’s column on the ballot.
