The Ramsey Office of Emergency Management will be participating in the 75th ARRL Annual Field Day Weekend, sponsored by the American Radio Relay League, the Association of Amateur Radio. The event, scheduled for June 27 and 28, involves all American radio operators in the United States. The purpose of the exercise is to test the emergency capabilities of ham radio operators during a natural or manmade disaster. “We will have the capability of contacting other ham operators at the Arctic Circle, the Antarctica Continent and even the space shuttle,” commented Ramsey OEM Coordinator Michael Adams, who is licensed as WA2MWT. “We will be operating from the emergency operations center at the borough hall, the Campgaw Ski Lodge in Mahwah, and the New Jersey Forestry Service fire tower off Skyline Drive in Ringwood.” The exercise runs from 2 p.m. on Saturday until 2 p.m. on Sunday. Last year’s event involved 2,115 amateur radio organizations. Only 179 of them operated F Class stations, the designation for the recent category of emergency

management ham radio participation. The Department of Homeland Security is encouraging more realistic emergency operating conditions from emergency operations centers. “While the outdoor facilities must rely on emergency generators and portable antennas, we can run the EOC exercise on our 12 Volt direct current power supply,” Adams said, “As you drive by the Ramsey Municipal Building, you will see temporary antennas being utilized.” Although Ramsey OEM currently has 62 amateur radio operators on its roster, including Mayor Christopher Botta, it is not a radio club. Its members belong to the 10-70 Repeater Association, a Bergen-Passaic club, the Metroplex Amateur Radio Club based in Fort Lee, and the 49 Repeater Association in Ringwood. The 10-70 will be operating from Campgaw Ski Area, the 49 will be at the forest fire tower, and the MARC will be based at borough hall. “We will be holding an opening ceremony, at 1 p.m., on Saturday, June 27, with several elected officials com-
mitted to participating. We will then take the short ride to the Campgaw Ski Area, for additional opening presentations,” Adams stated. “The public is invited to stop by both locations and check out a very reliable form of emergency communications.” For directions, contact the Ramsey Office of Emergency Management at (201) 825-3400, extension 420.
